Hi Thumbsucker,
Does the model you bought turn the pump off when it gets to the required vacuum level and restart if thereis loss of pressure? I'm on holiday in the UK and spent the past few days in a workshop using a vacuum pump (for veneering) that just ran constantly. Something to be avoided if possible?
Don't you just love vacuum bags/pumps, though? It's like magic to see everything clamp down so tightly. Would be grateful for some feedback when you've used your system a couple of times as I'm in the market for something very similar.
Thanks,
Brian

The pump is rated for continues operation, It is however very quiet, I have used vacuum pumps you could hear through a brick wall this machine is rated at 55~60 dB (Normal conversation, background music), so its no where close to being noise machine.
He did have a machine that had a 6 litre tank attached but he said it was a cheaper machine that was not rated for continues use so the tank allowed it to shut off when the required negative pressure was achieved.
Agreed I think any woodworker who does not have one is foolish. They are so useful from veneering, bent lamination, curved components to lifting, holding & moving workpieces in the workshop.

Today I purchased 4.5 meters of vinyl for my bag, and I purchased two pieces of 1000mm Gutter Strip to use a breather mesh.
I am still waiting for the glue.
I am also trying to figue out how to make a valve stem assembly.
I have a one of these:
I thinking of purchasing two Mudguard Washer 1/2" x 2" x 14g Stainless
s-l500.jpg
and two 50mm Rubber Gaskets Washer 2mm Thick and drilling a suitable hole in the middle
s-l1600.jpg
Then I will be able to just fit a thin profile nut to tighten the whole assembly from these components, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Unless someone can direct me to were I could purchase a complete valve stem assembly?

What about one of these? You can get them for bicycle, car or truck tubes. They can be glued or vulcanised on.

You can can also get screw fitted types

In the past I used the valve stem off truck inner tubes. They are available from truck tyre fitters as when the tube is stuffed they throw them out.
You glue them to the vinyl with contact adhesive, remove the inner valve and slip an appropriate sized rubber hose over the brass tube.
This is an example of what I mean. They can also be bought as new assemblies but a truck tyre fitting source is much cheaper.

I just used normal contact adhesive (3M brand from memory) but I was using a rubber sheet and pressing against a glass sheet to guarantee that the material was flat with no wrinkles or high spots caused by a bubble of glue. The glass also enabled you to inspect the finished product as you were working. Any glue that oozed out was easy to clean off the glass with a scraper (chisel).
I used plastic drawer liner, the one that is made with lots of small pyramids, against the backing to enable the vacuum to get all of the air out. The valve was fitted in the middle of this backing sheet.

You're looking for vacuum bag connector or port. This is one version. I have some with multi-start threads rather than the cross pin. They let you make a bag out of anything like a heavy plastic barrel liner. The people that supply to boat builders market them.

Hi Thumbsucker,
May I ask which model Rob recommended - the 80RND?
Thanks,
Brian

He did not recommend a specific one.
I had a choice between single vs double head, I choose the double.
To be honest I do not understand vacuum science.
All I have gathered is that you can have more air pulling power (free flow rate) vs how much pressure the pump can exert (Max vacuum)
For vacuum bagging Max vacuum would be the more important thing.
However my understanding is limited and maybe wrong. Hopefully someone else could chime in.
Look at the pdf
