Veritas Saws
For very many years I have been cutting tenons with an old Sanvik (spelling?) tenon saw I bought from some hardware store. I was never happy with the results. The face of the tenons were rough and it was as hard as could be to cut to a line to get accurately sized tenons. This I blamed on my own lack of skill/stupidity. Until Sunday. Recently I bought a little Veritas 20TPI dovetail saw. They are just magical. In as long as it took to pick up the saw my cutting skills went from weekend hacker to master craftsman (almost, perhaps). The tenons look like they were taken from magazine article.
My next trip to Carbatec will be to get a 16 TPI rip saw and a purpose made cross cut saw.
But there is a lesson in this for me. There is a saying that "a poor craftsman blames his tools." And sometimes they do. But maybe sometimes all you need is a better quality tool to get the job done right. My age is still less than my number of posts

I have been at the same stage and can relate. After getting the Veritas I found it easy to cut and use.
What I also try to do when generally working on a project is to use the older saws so I get a feel using different saws.
There might be times that you need to do a cut not in your shed and use a different saw.

I picked up a set of the Veritas saws just recently, but haven't had a chance to put them into action yet. Glad to hear that they're a treat to use! Now I just need some uninterupted shop time!

Vaguely on subject, I think I remember IanW looking at saw files - one in particular was very poor and would have made it nigh on impossible to produce an evenly sharpened saw.
So, you sometimes can blame your tools.
Cheers,
Jim

This is a Veritas saw set with prices (US$):

I purchased a pair of Veritas saws (US$112.00), direct from Lee Valley. May be Carbatec sells them in sets.
Great saws for the price.

I bought a pair from Jim Davey - don't know if he still sells them or for what.
As Ekim states above: Great saws for the price. Not as pretty as brass-backed saws, but I like 'em.
