The clothes hanger now resides in the corner of the bedroom. I finished it earlier in the week with hmmm maybe 6 coats of shellac and intend to wax it with some Liberon black bison wax too. I must also fit some brass bar under a few coat hangers for slacks etc.

I am far from happy with it.

    • it is a little too tall and imposing. I would change the design to have an upright back and joined to this, an arm that carries the hangers sloping down to the front.Attachment 147208
    • if I do another, the hook material should be referenced to match the grain of the upright. Would have been simple to rip the veneers off the stock adjacent to where upright was cut off.
    • I would use dominoes instead of m&t for the base

I am happy with the base, the stability and the way it sits in a corner.
Here's the sketches I used showing the evolution of the design if anyone is interested. There were some whacky ideas in there, including carved horse head hook for the hangers because swmbo lives for horses.

    Would like to hear criticisms.

I like the idea, great use of space! Shame you are not happy with it - what about the missus, what does she think?

It got a slightly positive response but she doesn't say much, a bit non-commital. Much like the forums of late it seems

    There there!!

I think you have some interesting design ideas there Mic. I still worry about the balance issues, Especially with that first variation. Just doesn't look stable.

To me the upright should lean back a little to counterbalance the weght that comes on the end of the outward and downward sloping arm.

LOML brought a "thing" over from Brasil. Typical "clothes tree"' Bugger of a thing. It has three feet and you can hang gear on three side of it. Trouble is only 2 side get used - the ones not in the corner, obviously. This means that when you move the thing it wants to topple over. Basically I see it as a good idea badly done because of the balance issue.

Thanks fellas. Don't draw too much from that first variation drawing artme, it was just a few rough lines to illustrate a concept, but you are right that it wouldn't work too well like that. This one is as solid as a rock, and becomes even more stable with added weight. Sounds like you need to commision someone to make you a functional one

Here are some nicer shots of the clothes rack. The design is growing on me and following on from a few comments it's received I've decided to explore the design commercially.

    It looks really well Michael.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

I like the clothes hanger the way it curves in.

    Hi Mic,

I don't get on here that often and I've only just discovered this thread. Just read through the whole thing. It' great for us who are still trying to work out what it's all about, to be able to observe a process like that. Weighing up design ideas as you go, making small detail adjustments, and sometimes putting a lot of work in and then not being entirely satisfied.

For me, a fascinating, educational and inspirational thread Also a good laugh.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.
