Chisel! that's it. Somebody else told me that was what I should use but I couldn't remember the name. Do they make a lot of noise when they're running?

They can be noisey, but roll up some little bits of fresh white bread and stuff them in your ears and you'll be all right.

Made no difference. He's 27 now and it's still all over the floor

I forgot to mention; don't forget to roll a length of knotted thread into the bread so you can retrieve it.

Well it goes without saying I thought, that I'd let the cats lick the ear wax off before I ate the bread. Not so silly after all eh?

did you know cats love ear wax as much as dogs like horse sauce ? (damhik)

'Spose. I think I'd rather eat bread with my own earwax on it than bread that the cat's licked though.

That really is a great THING...the thing is about these things is that the thing becomes a thing because you need a thing to do things with...I think it is also a cousin to thingy-me-bobs.

Bit more progress to show. I finished the first lot of bends in the black wattle that will become the hook part of the coathangers. Used a combination of microwaving and hot pipe bending to get these 13mm radius curves. The oven bag bending strap works very well. Unfortunately noone reminded me to sand the veneers before bending and I got carried away with the fun of it all, so there is a bit of work ahead of me there.

I released the upright from the drying form and the curve is a little more open than the pattern I was using as my goal. I may be able to live with it, but it's also possible to cook it again and bend it too an even tighter radius.

I cut the mortises today and the jig and registry block was a big help. I just have a small gap at the shoulders to finesse and it will be apples.

Both the legs and the upright need a final shaping but this has not been decided yet, the design is staying only one step ahead of the construction.

Not a good day. Working out how to hang the coat hangers is not going well. Firstly, the veneer is a bit on the thin side and my mock up piece broke along the grain. Secondly I don't really like the look of it. The hooks were to be hung over pairs of dowels on each side of the upright, but at each station down the upright the hooks on the hanger need to get longer and longer to clear the upright. hmmm thinking thinking. Metal eyes and standard coat hanger hooks are looking better all the time.

Also cannot decide on the shape of the supports. I like the idea in the drawing with the supports tapering down and finishing in a cylindrical shape at the end. swmbo doesn't think this ties in with the rest though.

Today is one of those days where I wonder why I am doing this.
    Any thoughts happily accepted.

The coat rack on the wall looks perfectly good to me... what do you want to make another one for?

I like the cylinders on the ends of the feet. Have you given any thought to ball-and-claw feet?

    Thumbs up

How come I missed all the fun on this ?

Should be a good looking "thing when finished Mic. Like the overall design, especially the feet. ( take no notice of that Irish bloke, after all he is locked in a time warp.)

Thanks fellas. Things look better with a full tummy, I was a bit of a grouch for not stopping for lunch.
I was expecting the hardest part of this to be the M&T joints, but they were the easiest (although I might use Dominos next time), wasn't expecting the hanger part to be the trickiest.

WW, not enough wood to do a ball and claw, but thanks for the suggestion.
    Cheers
