Had a bit of time this afternoon to work up a design for the supports, bandsaw them out and start to tidy them up with a spokeshave and fishtail gouge. Boy I love black wattle. I will carve the cylinder top into a hemisphere I think.

    Cheers

Do you really think a mock-up of Stirling Moss' head is the way to go??

    Arrow

Stirling Moss, ex British racing driver, bald dome, advertised the valiant hemi motor.

I personally think the plain cylinder will be fine.

Eureka! rather than have the hook component on the coathanger, which looked really ugly in the earlier shots, I've cut the hooks down and will glue and fair them into the upright. Looks muuuch better. Maybe some photos in the next day.
ps, Artme, the cylinders are still flat on top

Here's some photos of where the coat rack is at. The hooks have been shaped and glued on, just a final shaping and fairing in to do. I've turned a number of cylinders that will be attached to the hanger part by brass rods. There is one mocked up but the hanger will be a bit lower than pictured. Also thinking off suspending a long cylinder under the hangers for trousers.
Just trying to find brass rod now.

    cheers

I was browsing in HobbyCo the other day and noticed that they have brass rod in all sorts of sizes, and even in square and hexagonal cross section. They might have what you want? Or a similar hobby shop.

Looking really good Mic! Particularly the feet!

Have you thought out the weight distribution for the clothes properly ( Sorry, daft question )

Just thinking about it toppling over.

Thanks Poppa for the suggestion. I went over to George Westons and Son and picked up 3.6m length of 3/16" brass round for $12. (Also got some 0.9mm copper sheet offcut for shimming out blades in spokeshaves)

Thanks Artme, I like the feet too. Regards the weight distribution, the uppermost hanger is just behind an imaginary line joining the end of the two supports which I think makes everything OK. Also the design is made to sit in a corner so if worst comes to worst I can always put in a couple of wire stays back to the wall

Finished assembling the coat hangers this evening. Here are the jigs I used to drill the components. For the cylinders, just a simple v-block with some 180 grit paper glued to it.
    Attachment 146403
To drill the hangers I held them in a block of wood with a trench cut in it. Aligning the centre-line of the block and the hanger leveled the hanger on the drill press so I was assured of holes at the correct angle.

I used a bullet head drill to do these. Firstly dropped the running drill to just touch the work and check for correct alignment before completing the hole.

I still have to do some finer details and finish it but here is how it looks at the moment. I'm unhappy with the photos, it looks better in the flesh but I just can't capture it.

    Thats it for tonight.

Finish is going on at the moment. The black wattle bends are starting to take on a really nice metallic look. Oh yes I just noticed the dry areas right in under the hooks, must get a finer rag

The red ash grain is really starting to pop too.

I'm using a 2lb cut of blonde shellac and will finish with a coat of liberon wax.

    Cheers
