    Default WIP Library Chair/Steps

    Hi woodies

I'm designing and making a Benjamin Franklin c.1786 Library Chair, however, I'm trying to bring it into the 21st Century in design so it can take its rightful place as piece if furniture rather than something hidden away in the kitchen (as we don't have libraries like they use to) to use for steps. This is the start and I am learning to use turbocad to get onto plans so others can build it.

First pick is the karri slab
second pick some parts cut up for shaping
third pick a dry fit up of the back rests

Default WIP: Update Pictures Library Chair/Steps

I've done some more work, including on turboCad so plans are updated as I go.

First Pic is the two parts that make one side (a hinge joins them at the seat)
Second Pic is more how they will look when assembled.

I'm not so sure, but some more styling might still be needed at this stage, I'll decide later.

    Default Glue Up

Here is one side completed, it has just been glued. You will notice that it has an arm rest and thats because I like to have some where to put my arms when I read a book or just sits. I have also done some more shaping on the legs since the last post as thought it needed more.. I still have some more shaping to do and designing of the steps.

Looks really good so far, should be a useful item, but was wondering if the timber is karri as you say, or kauri, which is more like a pine than a Euc.?
    Look fwd to further pics.

    Cheers,
Yes you're right it should be Kauri but I was not aware of the correct spelling at the time of my first post. I just knew someone would pick me up on it. I didn't know the timber myself, never used it before and relied on how it was pronounced by my timber supply lady, she didn't know how to spel it either.

That's good, should be a nice timber to work with. Where did you get the slab?

    Cheers

Well I was told the same, that it is a nice timber to work with. It is in the main, however, it dose not like hand cut mortises, it tends to rip rather than cut through the grain. Yes I have very sharp chisels. I picked this wood on the recomendation of my supplier as it is easy to work and has little weight in compared to a hardwood (I refuse to work in pinus radiata). Weight is a consideration as to move it about to use for steps it needs to be lighte for ease of carry.
My supplier is 'A local Tree Service' at Petrie/Naragbar Phone 0400173453. Chat to Kim, she handles the sales. They have lots of different types of mainly hardwood slabs, at reasonable prices.
