Are you able to get two arms out of one length? Be good if you could me thinks.

The arm blanks need to be 65mm thick so I'll have to laminate two boards together. I also did this with my original set of arms as I couldn't find walnut that was thicker than 50mm

But those two pieces are from the same board so I'll match up the grain as best as I can.

I reckon you've done the right thing. You wouldn't have been happy with any other fix, even if you were the only one who knew about it.

I glued up the walnut today so I can get a finish size of 2 x 65mm thick boards (100mm wide X 500mm long). I got plenty of extra width and length so I'll have a look at the grain and see how I can best match it up to look the most appealing.

I've been also thinking more about the type of finish I'll use. Initially I was set on the maloof mix that I can make myself. But now I'm thinking of trying osmo polyx oil. I've been keen to use it for a while. Has anyone used it? I'd like to hear what you think of it and the type of finish it leaves?

My go to finish for the past 5 years has been livos kunos oil which I've had excellent results with. I just don't think it will wear as well though.

    Cheers

Osmo 3032 satin is my finish of choice now. I rarely use anything else. sand to 180, apply 2 thin coats, done. It goes a Long way. Some sand to 240 but I see no benefit from doing so. Talk to the distributor. He has samples available for a reasonable price. Methods of application vary from maker to maker. Anton Gerner uses a low nap mini roller and gets a great result off the roller. I tend to use a 50mm brush with a dab and swirl motion to get the THIN coat down and finish with long strokes. Easier to show rather than explain. I only just touch the tip of the brush into the finish. There tends to be just a mere few drops on the very end of the bristles. Do NOT load the brush as you would with paint or regular finishes, you will apply too much and retard cure. Did I say it goes a long way? Did I say apply thin coats? Do the experiment.

    Cheers

Thanks mate for that. I'll probably just get a sample and test it on a few boards.

I've been meaning to use it for a while now as everyone raves on about it.

Another vote for the Osmo Polyx here - I just started using the 3032, and it gives great results. Mind you, everyone seems to have their own way of applying it; I haven't departed from the recommended method yet (see their webpage). I picked up the smallest can of 3032 from Euro Style Floors in Banksmeadow, and even that is going to last me ages at the current rate of application. They also have the small sample sachets, which they seem happy to dole out to anyone who asks. As well as the 3032, I also got a couple of sample sachets of the 3044 (Osmo Raw) to try on lighter timbers like Rock Maple.

Good to see the chair really starting to take shape Andy, it'll come up a treat with a nice satin finish.

The small sachets will cover about an A4 size area as a guide. They are a good way the gauge how much to apply per coat. I think, from memory they are 5ml.

Default WIP - Maloof inspired rocker

I can't believe it's been 3 months since my last update! I started working on the arms yesterday. As previously mentioned I've decided to completely redo the arms. Although it's frustrating, I've since looked at other arms and decided on a shape that I like better so it works out ok.

I forgot how much work was involved in just fitting the arm blank to the chair. But I've now fitted each arm so that it sits flush with the rear legs (which was my problem with the first set of arms) and flush with the front leg. I'm very happy with the fit.

I've posted a pic of the spindles which need to be shaped and fitted to give you an idea of what it's going to look like.

    IMG_2591.JPG

I've also decided to sculpt a deeper seat. I reckon it just looks better and makes more of a statement.

Next step is getting the arms sculpted and permanently attached to the chair.

I roughed out the arm blanks on the bandsaw the other day and began sculpting the arms today. I used the rotary angle sander with saphir 24 grit. The thing is an absolute beast! I'm very impressed. The holey galahad wheels are great and they still serve a purpose, but the RAS has just as good control but has dust extraction (about 70%).

    IMG_2610.JPG

I marked out a large 45 degree chamfer on the inside and a shallow chamfer on the outside. This is just to get the basic shape of the top of the arm. I'll refine it later.

    IMG_2607.JPG

After the inside chamfer is sculpted.

    IMG_2612.JPG

And both chamfers done... there's still plenty to do to the top of the arms, but I'm happy where it's at now.

This is the finish that I'm hoping to get from the osmo polyx oil. I've heard really good things about it and looking forward to use it.

This is one of Charles Brocks rockers, I really like the deep seat and the sharp lines at the front. I'm trying to get the same look.

I've continued working on the arms over the past few days. It's a slow process which involves stopping and working on the other arm to make sure I keep them looking the same.

I took a little break from the arms yesterday afternoon to work on the rockers. I'm obviously jumping ahead with the build, but curiosity got the better of me and I really wanted to see how the rockers will look. So I dressed up my walnut and ripped long thin (about 3mm) strips for the bent lamination. I'm also using the huon pine that Fletty gave me as a contrasting timber in the rockers, there will be 2 strips in each rocker. I haven't cut the laminations in the huon yet as I need to work out the most efficient way of cutting it up without wasting the precious material.

    IMG_2634.JPG

The bent lamination form is not finished yet. I still need to make it thicker so I get even pressure when clamping. I still couldn't help myself so I put the rockers in the form to see if I'm on the right track. It seems it's working great so looking forward to finishing the form and gluing up the rockers.

The arms are getting there. This is the look I'm going for. You can see the outer part of the arm has a hard line, this wraps all around the arm, then goes up the rear legs and continues along the headrest. I'm a bit of a nerd, but it's small details like this that really excite me with this build.
