Looking good Andy - you'll be rocking in no time !

I like the prep work on the seat; removing bulk material from selected boards on the BS before glue up saves a lot of work with the grinding wheels later for sure.

Default WIP - Maloof inspired rocker

The goal this morning was to grind down the inner perimeter down to the flat areas and roughly blend them in.

I secured the seat with holdfasts and clamps.

    IMG_3200.jpg

I used the course wheel to first establish the inner perimeter then with slow cautious strokes I blended in the two areas.

The surface is still rough but I'll use my fine wheel to refine the shape. Then it's lots of sanding and scraping.

The bottom template is the one that comes with the plans. I do like it but I want more of a dramatic front. So I got some scrap plywood and traced the shape of the front seat and cut it out on the bandsaw. I'll freehand a couple of curves and once happy I'll cut it out and trace it on the front of the seat.

This is the shape I like (one of Charles Brock's rockers).

The time on grain selection looks to have definitely paid off. The grain in the seat looks amazing.

    Thanks mate.

Not sure if I've mentioned it before but boards 2 & 4 and 1 & 5 were one board and I split them in half. The centre board (3) was selected to blend in with boards 2 & 4. That way I could get even grain orientation.

Great progress. Really looking great and I agree with Shane re the grain. Is the front centre going to be as "pointy" as it looks in the photo?

It is more pointy than some of the other rockers I've seen. The best way to describe it is like a crest of a wave. I'll take some more pics throughout the week as I continue working on the seat.

I got some more grinding done on the seat this morning. I'm being pretty conservative with it all and only doing a little bit at a time. It's really easy to get lost in the moment and grind too much away or grind the wrong area.

I started work on the front profile and happy where it's at right now. Next I'll grind the round over more into the seat and blend in the pommel area. Then I'll flip the seat over and blend in the two curves using the die grinding and rasps.

Yesterday I went around to Nick's and he turned the two front legs. It's an off set and tapered turning with 1/2" holes in the end to attach the arm and rockers.

Hoping to get back in the shop later this arvo and continue working on the seat!

I ended managing an hour or so this afternoon to drill the 1/2" holes for the back slats. I used the seat template to mark out the holes and drilled them on the drill press.

    IMG_3281.jpg

I also spent some more time refining the seat. I worked on the underside with a die grinder and used rasps to refine the shape. There's still work to be done including lots of scraping and sanding but I think I'll leave it as is for now.

I also started on the arm blanks which will be the next phase of this build.

    Cheers!

Anyone got a piece of Huon pine about 1500mm long X 30mm thick and 25mm wide that they're willing to sell?

I'm going to add a strip of Huon in the rockers for a nice contrast.

    Thanks!

    Hi Andy, SMS sent.
The Huon I have is a flitch from the same log that gave Claw Hama the material and inspiration to make 'Delian Diver' in the thread below. The Huon log sunk in the Gordon River MANY years ago and, in the drought of 10 (?) years ago, the river fell and the log was exposed only to then be scorched in a bushfire! This timber is a survivor and, thank heavens, Claw's pics also survived our very own act-of-God......

    https://www.woodworkforums.com/attach...2&d=1372772735

I'll check in the morning if the flitch will yield the piece you need. I think it would be really nice for your rocker to have 'history'?

This morning I cut the remaining pieces for the build. I thought I over purchased the timber but as it turns out I've only got a couple of small pieces left.

This is the arms blanks. They need to be around 65mm and around 560mm long. I need to laminate to get the desired thickness so I've book matched to get a nice even grain orientation. I've also made sure that the end grain matches up so hopefully I won't be able to tell that it's been glued together.

    IMG_3306.jpg

And the headrest board. As soon as I saw this board I knew what I was doing with it.

    IMG_3307.jpg

And the rockers will be cut from this long board on the left.

    IMG_3308.jpg

These are the two templates for the arms. I'll use these as a reference but just like the seat I'll add my own touch to it.

    IMG_3309.jpg

    Cheers!
