Default WIP - Maloof inspired rocker

I have always wanted to build a Maloof inspired rocker. I think I first saw Sam Maloof's rocker about 6 years ago when I first got into woodworking and I was totally blown away by the curves and the fine details that was involved.

After finding out that my wife and I were expecting our first child in January I knew I had to build one. It will be the perfect chair to sit on with my new born. After lots of research I decided to use a "traditional rocker" wood - American Walnut. I got it from Matthew's timber and I waited for their shipment to arrive to get first choice. I ended up with 4 lengths of between 190 and 270mm wide by 50mm thick and 3 metres long.

The plans that I am using are from Charles Brock. He's a US based woodworker who sells plans and templates on how to make a maloof inspired rocker.

I took this picture today after already cutting the pieces for the seat. It's very nice wood and I am really happy with my choice.

I have attached a photo of one of Sam Maloof and Charles Brock rockers.

First up is the seat. I spent quite a while figuring out the best grain pattern but I decided on this.

Pic 1 - the seat boards that I decided with.
Pic 2 - I used my bandsaw to "pre sculpt" the seat. I will used my angle grinder with sanding discs to create the curve of the seat later but by doing this now it makes it much easier.
Pic 3 - I used my jointer to create 3 degree bevels in some of the boards to help create the curve of the seat.

Good luck with the build, I hope you post progress updates.
Sure looks like a lot of wood for a chair!

So today I used the rear leg template to mark out the legs. I cut as close as I could to my line.

I haven't got a pic of it but I then used my template attached to the leg and went to the router table with a straight pattern bit to create a perfect match to my template.

And like I did with the seat I "pre sculpted" the rear legs on the bandsaw. These legs will be getting lots of attention with my sanding discs in the grinder and also rasps (which I still got to buy!).

And this is where I'm up to now.

The seat has the joinery cut at the rear but I still need to cut a dado at the front. I used dominos for the seat to help align.

I'm about to order a specialty set of router bits to create the "maloof joint" which is pretty much an open mortise and tenon.

I can't do much more without these router bits I might start on the back spindles (back support pieces) until they arrive.

It's definitely more wood than I need but I'm picky with grain orientation so I bought extra so I can choose the best grain for each part.

Yep they're the ones I'm using - kutzall.

A course and medium dish wheel should be all I need for the grinding. Then I'll use a die grinder with various bits for the more detailed work.

Congratulations Andy, you and your wife are about to enter the greatest part of your life.
Your care with grain selection is well & truly justified for this heirloom piece. Looking forward to your progress.
A couple of pattern makers' rasps (Liogier or similar) will be a big help when you start shaping the legs.
