Well here is the back and if you think this looks a little different from the one in the last post, youre right. I did say I'll do the back and if I stuff it I'll have to do it again and you gessed it, I stuffed it up. 8 Hours work later and its looking good for now, both sides all finished. I've posted a pick of fitting the back slats as a dry fit test before I do final shaping to see if they all fit OK and to make adjustements. enjoy

Well I managed to get the back rest all finished for a dry fit up today and now working on getting the sides and left leg ready. Its been hard work as a first design with no solid plans and there are things still to work out as I go but I must say I think I have most problems solved, I just have to try them for real. Enjoy

Well more work done and progress being made. Pic 1 is a dry fit up of the basic seat base and pics 2 & 3 are of a more ridgid and braced fit up some glued and pocket hole fixed. I will be working on a full basic base glue up with the head rest and back slats in place this week, after which comes the cradle slats and top cradle rail. I've solved many of the fit up problems now and I am looking at meeting most of the voluntary Aust Standards for a cradle. Yes, there is one sort of and it's different from the cot standards. I don't think they thought any one would build a rocking cradle this way. Enjoy

Got some more time on it and attached and glued the right arm along with some minor shaping completed. There is no left arm and the left arm support you can see is for the end of the top rail of the cradle to fit on to. At present I'm laminating the cradle slats, there's 17 of these and I only seem to get one a day done. I have 8 completed and will start to put some in as a dry fit up. I'm trying to comply with the voluntary Aust standards for cradles that came out in September where possible with spacings and hights etc. Enjoy.

For all those who are still following this WIP here are some more pics from todays dry fit up. The slats still need shaping and so does the end rail. Enjoy.

Looking good, SB. I like the lighter coloured slats.

That is a substantial piece of furniture, can't wait to see it finished.

May have missed it, but is this a commission?

No Tex B, it's not a commission, it's a prototype but I already have someone interested in buying it. I'm not sure what I'll do yet I was making it for a competion but I'm not happy with it yet. Its got to sing for me, if you know what I mean.

    Default More progress pics

After a few hours in the workshop I've just about finished the cradle slats as far as I'm going to shape them in this dry set up. I decided that they needed more style and shape and this is my solution. Yes, if you look closely you can see I've used eee on the inside of the slat rails, this is so I get in between the slats befor I glue up. Now onto all the other things I've got to sort out before I make and put on the rockers. Enjoy.

    Great looking piece of furniture

Out of interest, what did the Standard say about the spacing of the slats?

The standard said spacings of no less than 50mm and no more than 95 mm. This is so the babies head is not traped and arms and legs can easily move in between the slats. Note for o cradle it is a voluntary standard but for a cot there is another standard that is not volutary but compulsory and may be different.

    Beautiful Work SB.

I'm just wondering abot the legs. I realize they are shaped for uniformity but with the thing assembled they look a little "odd" and it looks as if the unit could topple. I don't expect it will, but that is what it looks like. I, for one, am always turned off pieces whose legs "tuck under". Just my opinion.

Do you think this might have an adverse effect on potential sales.
