    Default Wood Barrel

    Hi all,
l bought a small wood barrel,
l have soaked it for a couple of weeks,
it still has a small leak,
the leak seems to be at the rear, bottom,
where the barrel end fits into the outside,
How should l seal this leak?
If any one has a tip, l would be most gratefull
    Thanks Romana

    Default Silastic?

    Silastic? really, ozwinner
    l had thought of that,
but l didn't know if it was ok to do that,, mmmm

Auspiciousdna, l did go to that site, some good info there,
    thanks...

l have noticed now on looking closer, that the back hoop is a wee
bit loose, actually it had come apart at some stage and someone
hammered a little tack in there, but l can see that there is a gap,
from the original fixture, to where the 'tac' is now...

    thanks guys.

So you are saying that the hoop has broken at some point at the rivet(s) and been re-rivetted? Are the new rivet(s) are not sound? You will need to fix that (which means the hoop will have to come off, obviously) and the hoop driven back on again until the staves have all closed back up again.

Maybe the hoop is a tad over size from the last repair. If so, that may explain the problem you are seeing. Driving the hoop down will only get you so far in closing the staves. Anyway, it's a bit hard to say for certain without seeing.

Unhappy l got a picture of the Barrel

l have put a picture of the barrel up to the left side.
its not very good, but the best l could do at short notice.
l took the 'tac' / nail, out of the hole that replaced the rivet.
the rivet beside it is missing also.

    Re rivet the band.
    Let the wood dry some.
Drive the band towards the larger diameter until evenly tight all round.
    Re-wet the wood.

You can use sisal for caulking it the band does not work.
Drive it into the leak with a small punch. It will expand and stop the leak.
