    Default Wood panel spacing

I am in the final stage of panelling a home library.

I have put a box beam ceiling in, longwise in the room their is a central beam and 2 wall beams, dividing the room into 2 distinct ceiling panels.

The main window in the room is off centre by 50mm.

I am struggling with how to position the wall paneling. The Room width is 5m, window is 3m and is 1m from the floor.

With the window not technically in the true centre, (50mm offset to the left) should I centre the wall panels around the centre of the window or do I position panels to be centre of the room.

I have placed a mock panel
On the wall and the box beam centre panel dominates your field of view and I am thinking I should centre the panel so as to line up with centre of the room and hence the the box beam, but this really hi lights that the window is not in the true centre of the room.

    Any thoughts ?

I have some photos, but not sure how to post?

    Hmmm ... What a dilemma ...

I would have said that your eye will be drawn to the window. So centre to that.

    I would

1 ) pull off the architraves and move window 25mm to centre if possible

    2) irk me as it does ... move the beam off room center

I think you won't notice the ceiling beam to wainscoting alignment as much as the alignment around the window. Are your wall panels fixed width or can you make sizes to fit? If there is an integral number of panels under the window and no splits at each end, I can't see it being any easier to notice the off centre beam than it is now.

The only other consideration, is a bookcase is going on the RHS of the room.

i have flexibility in the panel spacing, but I only have limited materials to complete project.
its all been done in select grade myrtle, and since our green brethren have shut the native timber harvesting down, it's just about Impossible to source good select grade timbers now.

i go to bed thinking i need to centre the panels around the beam, and then in the morning I've changed my mind!!!!

    Hi Tripod,
What about boxing the beam to re-align to window centre would that help solve the problem.

Without exaggerating, I would of put in 5 weeks work in manufacturing, spraying and installing box beams with finishing mouldings.

plus the box Beam is glued into place, it's to much work,
same as moving the window, it's double glazed and it took 4 guys to install!!!

Depending on the furnishings, I personally would apply the KISS principle and finish the panels in line with the window frame.

This would leave everything off-centre, true, but makes the construction - and the visual esthetics - simpler, less cluttered.

Trying to centre the panels here will pretty much make the skew obvious at a glance, whereas keeping it simple obfuscates things a bit and appropriate furniture placement can make it appear even more balanced.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I think I am leaning to, centering panels around windows

i will cut some more panels and place then place them along the wall to get a better final impression
