what kind of wood is this? (pics)
i'm paying roughly 12k for a new kitchen in maple...but i'm a bit skeptical about the wood this contractor is bringing me...he gave me a sample and stated it was "soft-maple"and that this will be what my cabinets are made from...but it looks like popular...i'm not TOO experienced with identifying wood...so i did take it to a carpenter local to me and she stated she believed it was popular aswell saying the color isn't that of a maple that she knows of...unless it's a different kind of maple he is using that she's never seen. she also used a chisel to crave the edge a bit and it kind of splint and she showed me the difference between a maple and popular and showed me what "real" maple looks like when craved at like that...and it didn't split like this.... so i'm a bit skeptical at this point... i have no problem getting popular wood...but there is no way i should be paying for maple wood and get popular wood while the price point is dramatically different.
what do you all think?

It certainly looks like soft maple from a Google search. Poplar (no 'u') is almost white, your bit seems to have some yellow through it.

Find somebody local with a really solid interest in wood anatomy at the microscope level. American Poplar and American Maple will not take 60 seconds to identify.
Not Google or Gargle. I refuse to guess. Gross anatomy and just looking at the wood isn't a good thing to guess at.
"Hard" or "Soft" maples depend on who is doing the talking.
