Knot filler is the best solution for wood repairs. It is easy to use, and the result is great whether you fix a scratch, damage or big knot. You can even use knot filler to repair corners and edged of wood. Thermelt is made from polyamide and is especially developed for wood fillings because the wood and filler works togetner.

Being polyamide (AKA Nylon), I wonder how well it will take stains/finishes.

In the blurb it says that it takes stains but you won't know until you have actually used it I guess.
Crowie, you will have to get some and report back to us. There's a place in Melbourne that sells it and the gun for $252 for the small kit. https://www.allaboutthebase.com.au/product/1218/
