Default Wooden knife - aka letter opener

Its been a while since I losted any actual work so here it is. Started earlier in the week was a letter opener that went wrong. It snapped at the handle.

The timber was bulloke. I wanted a contrasting handle laminate on each side. To make this more difficult I wanted the blade to flare out to full thinckness of handle and then recess the laminates immediately behind this.

Rather than have a single thickness blade blank that runs into the handle this meant thicker stock and reduce each side. If course I selected what some call the hardest timber in the world. Without any further adieu this version 2.0

You can see the Tasmanian Celery Top Pine laminated on one side for contrast.

I used an oberhead router amd mobed the work beneath thw blade to reduce the stock

    Getting ready for side 2

That is a very dangerous looking paper knife Dave! The overhead router looks a bit terrifying too I hope that you keep hands etc. well clear of that. I look forward to seeing the final product.

Hand and push stick. Moved the work under the cutter.

Normally I would habe wanted to clamp the work and move the router.

Once glued it was matter of cut shape and sand

    Another angle

And as I wantes the stock to blend into the laminates you can see the widening here

All that's left is a bit of oil to bring it to like.

I remember Ray & You using that fancy machine with a circular saw on it.... Awesome bit of kit, but way too big for most sheds.. Cheers, Peter
