Default wooden material for workshop cabinet doors?

I have made up a cabinet for my metal working shop but need advice on what material to make the doors out of...

I have tried to use 12mm plywood but it just wants to warp all over the place.. What is a good cheap material to make doors out of?

Looks do not matter as it is not a show piece...

For stability and economy, I would suggest 16mm melamine coated chipboard or 16mm MDF. The chipboard would last better with some edging, and the MDF could be sanded lightly and painted all over to suit the surrounds.

Ply may work, if you use a high grade stock, and fit it in a frame to supply rigidity and break the panels to moderate sizes.

I had the same problem with a cupboard door.

What I did was rebuilt it with a simple frame (with cross brace inside) made of pine and then skinned with ply. Most importantly it is sealed on both sides.

MDF would do the job but would be heavy. Maybe that doesn't matter. Ply should not warp if you laminate 2 X 6mm panels together with the grain running from one panel across the other or double lined on a frame; having both sides of the frame paneled should cancel out any warping. MDF really takes a nice paint finish and can be matched to any scheme easily. Not too sure it would stand up to much rough usage though.
    Reality is no background music.

Just one thing you may have forgotten to mention John.
It takes a nice finish, except the end grain. Brush a coat of PVA glue on that part, quick sand and then it's fine.

That makes a nice combination of inexpensive materials. Kwila decking is also great for benchtops.

I use perspex for my workshop cupboard doors.

Maybe you need to install more lights so the blind buggers can see better.
