woodwork tool supplier - western part of melbourne
hello
I want to do a little woodwork. Does anyone know a place that sells good woodworking equipment in the western suburbs of Melbourne. I live in Sunshine. Today I went to Bunnings and looked at their bandsaws, GMC and Ryobi. To me they looked a bit flimsy (was not really impressed). I am looking at paying around $500. I dont want anything really big (something that fits on a bench would be ideal)
does such a thing exist. Is price reasonable? second hand is ok, new is ok too.
I have looked on eBay, there are some very heavy items (too big). Plus they do not deliver. Yes I know a taxi truck is an option, but I would really prefer something smaller, as I have a large, very solid workbench where it could go.
Worse comes to worse I want to buy a nice japanese pull saw (or a european dovetail saw). I think there is a place in South Melbourne for this (probably not open Sundays?). I have a tenon saw, but would prefer something a little finer for more delicate work.
backgound - i am building a boat. (nothing flash.. just something of reasonable building standards)

hello
i know i am ignorant, please excuse that
I see that new carbatech bandsaws are about $650.. that is an option
Ordering tools from Japan, I will certainly consider that. All depends on how much I save when postage is included.
whilst i am here, does anyone know if sutton bandsaw is a big thing. Are they good machines? Actually I do have space for a free standing bandsaw if I have to. I saw this thing, not sure if it is good/bad, esay to get blades etc. I am sure if would be more sturdy than the GMC bandsaw from Bunnings.
BAN SAW
dont everyone go and buy it before me please.

Peter, Metabo make a bench top Band saw, and one or two others.
Can't speak for the band saws, but my 25 year old Metabo Hammer drill refuses to die.

ok
I have a fair bit of information now, including some suppliers. Metabo product was a good lead. There are some agents close to where I work. I dont think we officially close threads here, but i think this might do it.. thanks for your help

Hi Guys
Ive owned a Metabo BAS317 for 3 or 4 years now and find it very good, for the price paid I would recommend Metabo in an instant.

hello,
just to keep you all in the loop. I spoke to Roy on the phone this afternoon and he was very helpful. I asked about the Metabo, his opinion was that it was not a really bad piece of equipment, but it was a bit limited.
His recommendation was a ledacraft BAS 350
Leda Machinery Catalogue
This machine costs $650, weight about 85kg
His thoughts were that I was likely to outgrow the cheaper Metabo, and spending the money on the more capable machine was worthwhile. The Metabo was $450 and about 38kg. Now I can afford the more expensive machine, and I do have a place to put it I must admit.
The question I have to ask myself, is how much do I really need one at the moment, can I justify it. etc etc. I do have the money, whether or not I will use it enough to justify the money is a problem for me alone.
Whether this Leda is a better brand than say a Carbatech I do not know. It might just be a case of getting what you pay for. I must admit that Roy was pretty helpful and straight up. My other option is to have a look around and see if something pops up on eBay in next couple of weeks.
I think I am getting a feel for this a little bit, the Leda seems a good thing to go with, the decision I have to ask myself is how much do I need it right now. I might give it a week or 2 to think about.
thats is for now .... will leave you all to doing what you were doing, thanks for your pointers.
