If there is a laminex distributor your way, then perhaps you could get some high density fibre board from them - heavy as all hell apparently and comes in a fixed size so you could make two drop in bench tops.

My bunnies doesn't have it in stock, but they have a permanent notice saying they can order it in.

Whats the actual difference between normal and tempered, is it just the hardness of the outer surface?

1. Made appropriately hard or flexible by tempering
2. Having the requisite degree of hardness or elasticity

Lou, most bunnings out my way have Weathertex signboard, which is a tempered masonite about 10mm thick with a white primed face.

The size is 1200 x 900 for $9 I think, you could use 2 for a bigger bench.

Some door manufacturers use tempered hardboard for their exterior doors, eg Corinthian call theirs Duracote, light green in colour. May be able to scab some from one of those if nearby.

Cheers...............Sean, hardly board on these bulletin boreds

Tempered masonite is lots more dense all the way tru than standard stuff. the underlay stuff is prety thin unfortunatly, I haven't seen 6mm tempered masonate for ages.
Sign board is great stuff bit it isn't as dense or as hard at the real tempered stuff.
cheers
