    Default You're kidding me!

    G'day,

Saw this piece of furniture in the Sunday magazine of the Sun Herald Sun about a bloke who made a table from pallets and sells them for $2,800

A fool is soon parted with his/her money if you ask me. I mean they put these atronomical things in magazines like these and do people really go and buy them?

Quoted from the website: "Pallet Table is constructed from one entire industrial sized pallet. The pallet originated from the Iveco truck manufacturing plant in Dandenong and was used to import large truck engines into Australia.

The pallet was disassembled and all nails, nuts and bolts were removed and stored and later cast into 2 table legs. Pallet Table utilized the entire contents of the pallet. The only waste was sawdust and a handful of offcuts.

The anatomy of the table displays strong references to the original form of the pallet, thus giving the viewer an insight into its original function. The spirit of the pallet has been retained, even though it has morphed into a superior entity, more refined and beautiful than before.

Pallet Table could have easily ended up as a small portion of the 500,000 tons of timber waste that are disposed of each year into landfill, or as a pile of woodchips on the neighbour's garden. It was made to highlight the potential of using recycled timber in the production of high value items, rather than simply throwing it away or using it for low cost generic commodities."

I guess all the above is a n attempt to justify the stupid price.
I make things, I just take a long time.

Well, I guess it is said that one mans trash is another man treasure but.........

I think the price more to do with making the point of "production of high value items, rather than simply throwing it away"

Still, if he can find someone to pay $2,800 for a pallet table then good luck to him.

Its no wonder that Chep employs spies to keep track of their pallets and has no quarms about taking you to court if you get caught with one of their pallets - they are aware of their true value!
$2800 for a pine pallet that originated in the States, imagine how much you would get for a good old Aussie hardwood one.

Well at least we know that there is a fair bit of work in this one. Not as ridiculous as some others we’ve seen.

A woodworker (not artist) would sell the same table for maybe $1,000.

That table won The Best in Show at the 2004 Create from a Crate competition organised by the VWA. I entered a coffee table that year and got a Honourable Mention. The criteria for the comp was a piece made from a crate using traditional cabinet making and furniture making skills.
I was invited to enter the in 2005 ,but declined as I believed the judges did not adhere to the criteria as set out on the entry forms.
I gave my table away, perhaps I could have got a couple of grand for it.

It might depend on weather you retained the spirit of the pallet whilst morphing it into a superior entity.

Midge may be along shortly to make us all take a good hard look at ourselves for not appreciating artistic talent.

    Thanks for that Dan!

To all you Phillistines, see one of my other rants!

Great value, someone now owns an appreciating piece of art which once one a prize in a national competition. Watch for it a few decades from now on the "Collectors".

Mmmm. Whilst I wouldn't like to put the mocker on genuine artistic talent, I just don't think I could get over the psychological hurdle when it came to parting with the $$$ that it was once a pallet.
