Default Explain The Usage Of These Polishing/Finishing/Burnishing Tools

I am interested in learning more about these

Can anyone tell me what they are called?

As far as I tell the yellow one is some kind of grass/reed and the black one is horse hair.

I watched a few youtube vids, but they are all in Japanese and they only offered glimpses of their uses.

In one the tansu was washed down with a mixture of water & something like pumice. After it dried the tansu was scrubbed down the grass/reed version.

Maybe to fill the pours? Maybe sanding it?

However beyond this limited understanding I know nothing.

The only western equvilint that I have seen is the ‘Polissoir’ – Roubo’s Wax Polisher.

Outside of urushi what to the Japanese finish their furniture with?

Yeah, my understanding is it's something about grain filling. You use it in conjunction with the FFFF pumice to create a dry slurry (whatever the word is for that) of pumice and wood chips for filling of grain before polishing.

But that's just kind of my interpretation. I'm honestly unsure and am interested to hear what others say.

    Cheers,

they look very similar to a "polissoir".
Chris Schwarz has a fair bit to say about them here A Ancient French Method for Finishing and Polishing Wood

and I think they feature in an episode of Roy Underhill's "wood Wrights Shop"

It seems to remove quite a bit of material going by the dust that falls off the end of the board after each pass.

Is it sanding the surface? or compressing softer fibres to give a textured feel to finished piece?

So its called uzukuri this post

    https://hillbillydaiku.com/2015/05/0...h-and-texture/ explains it really well.

It is different to polissoir, which is for the application of finish instead uzukuri are texturing tools.

I think it would only work on softwoods or certain hardwood like elm were there is a clear difference in hardness between the spring and summer growth.

However it seems to be a very little known tool/practice in the west.
