Identífication japanese chisels
Hi
Recently I bought an old set of Japanese chisels. Im a bit torn by my purchase, because usually I buy vintage tools from swedish or sometimes english manufactures, and more often than not they look like and needs some TLC before i can put them in to use. My problem with this set i basically that they look to nice to be used. Therefore I would realy appreciate if someone could tell me what im dealing with, blacksmith, Yoshiro Ikeda? steel, aogami?, shirogami? etc.. They should be 30 plus years..

You have a beautiful set.
Can you give us a clear photo of the inscription on the chisels that is the teller.

they look like a medium grade set of Damascus steel chisels sized 3 mm though to 42 mm. I say medium grade, because "premium" grade would most likely be fitted with Ebony handles. There would be no difference in performance or quality, just that premium grade chisels are fitted with higher cost handles.
They look like they have had little, if any, use but they should be excellent users.
I think I may have seen the labels before, possibly on a US web site.
I'm curious about how much you paid -- a new 10 piece set like what you have is well over 1000 Euro, perhaps, depending on the maker, a lot more.regards from Alberta, Canada

Ive paid about 500 euros. Bought them of a swedish craigslist counterpart.
The labels looks like these tags. But the stamp dosent look the same.

I think you may have a set of these https://www.fine-tools.com/tasai-chisels.html
at more than 200 Euro each, I think 500 Euro for the set was a stealregards from Alberta, Canada

The makers mark is not Tasai.
This is Tasai

This is what you have
Also the skill in the forging is no where near Tasai even their cheapest chisel would never exhibit the poorl forge weld seam seen on the ferrule. Also the flow of the lines are all wrong they lack the refinement and elegance of a quality chisel.

I would say you are looking at a common smith doing his fancy Damascus but the lack of refinement is obvious.
That being said the above does not mean that they are junk that will be known through use, they could well be we'll tempered and fine users all that you can do is set one up and use it.

Hiu Thumbs,
to my eye, what Vectorboy has looks very similar to this
which is described here https://www.fine-tools.com/tasai-chisels.html as a Tasai chisel,
but to me the mark on this example looks very different to the example you posted. Could there be two or more "Tasais" ?regards from Alberta, Canada

Here is some better pictures. I havent been able to find a spot on match to the mark on the chisel. But for all i know the blacksmith might not be active anymore. Ive tried to find a match among vintage chisels on ebay but without any luck.....
As for the welds i get a feeling that they are left rough on purpose. as you can see on the pictures they ar left realy rough, if the smith wanted to i reckon he just could have grind(scrape) them of.
