    Default Yari Ganna/Kanna in Australia

I am a convert to Japanese tools and have been so for some time. As such I am on the hunt for a traditional style Yari Ganna also referred to as Yari Kanna in Aus.

I have seen the Kawasei ones from Japanese tools Australia that have a steel ferrule and a turned handle about that are about $325Aud. However I am wanting one with a traditional shape and less rounded point. I am happy to handle one myself with traditional cane wrapping. Not too fussed about price this said I expect to pay no more than $1000 AUD for just the blade. I have seen the Yari Ganna by Tsunesaburo, Tasai and Iyoroi available from in the US however the preference is one with a Blue steel#1 blade steel and plain iron body rather than a Damascus steel body.

If anyone knows of a good source of Yari Ganna please let me know

That one (at bottom of page) is made from Blue paper steel. You will have to enquire about the price.

I have yet to be disappointed with a blade out of Niigata.

Try getting one without a handle. That only adds to shipping costs. Besides, like kanna blades, the best come as just the blade.

As for mokume pattern, it adds nothing to the performance of the blade. Stu (he is an Ozzy) at Tools from Japan has an established relationship with Tsunesaburo and may be prepared to put in an order from them for you for non-mokume and no handle.

I have used Tasai blades. They are good, but overpriced collector tools. The same for some of the other big names, IMO.

PS - do you have experience with sharpening Blue? It retains its edge for longer, but also takes longer to resharpen. A well forged White will retain its edge for almost as long, but is quicker to resharpen, IME.

I totally agree Neil that the Mokume adds nothing to the function of the tools its only for aesthetics and even the Japanese don not tend to use it for their tools as they are very modest in tool design and function. I have also found as you point out the all the good ones come un-handled which is my plan as you point out it saves on shipping and allows the person using it to set it up to how they like it regarding handle length.

As for sharpening blue steel I have not had much experience how ever my vintage Japanese 5mm Ori Nomi I think might be as its hard as hell and does take a bit to sharpen My other chisels are white steel as is my Kanna with is only Kakuri.

I will get in touch with Stu from Tools from Japan and see what he recommends I agree Tasai seemed to be over priced for what they are you are paying for the makers mark not just a tool.
