Default Help requested going from Sketchup to build on small but complex tight angles project

    Hi all,

Finally found a small wood working project that caught my interest for its complexity.

Its a 5 pointed star shaped fruit bowl made from 14.7mm thick bamboo ply.
The bamboo enhances its look because of the narrow strips/bands of grain.

The dimensions are 52cm wide from one star point to the other star point.

And 12cm sides. At 45 degree angles.

So its not a box with a lid nor a turned bowl.

I've spent the last few days learning the latest Sketchup 15.

Trying to figure out the easiest and most efficient way to draw the project in ketchup

using the basic knowledge gleamed from the beginners tutorials.

I've manage successfully but the angles and lengths seem strange.
Its either me not knowing or the complexity requires it.

I'm hoping someone will take pity on me and assist with sizing the project to make the compound cuts easier to manage on my mitre saw:

909 NINE Zero Nine 2400W 305MM (12") DOUBLE BEVEL SLIDE COMPOUND MITRE SAW WITH LASER

I could go out and just start cutting some 10mm mdf and pretty much make it up as I go along as usual.
But I'm hoping the design in sketchup will help make it easier.

I'm also hoping that multiple someones with a bit more than spacial smarts than my octagon deck would be willing to have a look.
And perhaps assist in me building the project in the most efficient way.

If you're interested please let me know.

I'm just waiting for the super nice gentleman, who created the original project, who's been very kind helping me so far,
to give me permission to post his project photos and files.

    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks,
    Barry G. Sumpter

    Sketchup Bamboo Start Shped Bowl

    Sketchup 15

    Polygon 5 sides 52 cm
    Pencil Draw Star

    eraser remove polygon lines
    eraser remove internal star lines

    Rotating rectangle
click starting point on one side of star
click ending point on same side of star (other end)
move mouse so tool starts showing angle
    enter 40,120mm (40 degrees as 120mm high

Make sure start is selected by Clicking Star
    Click Follow me
Click the rotating rectangle you just created

Select all top lines of the star
use offset to make a top star 13mm larger

Select all bottom lines of the star
use offset to make a bottom star 13mm larger

Join all the points of the top star to the same points on the bottom star

to remove the inner top star
join a top inner star point to the top outer star point using a line
Do this on two star points and Sketchup will separate the inner star for the 13mm border
then you can select the inner star and delete it.

Do the same to remove the bottom inner star if you want

Any chance of saving that Sketchup file for an older version of Sketchup? I'm not able to update to 15 at this time.

    Which version?

You should still be able to open the file in an earlier version.

There is just a warning about saving in earlier versions.

My 15 is the demo version.

    15 introduces the rotating rectangle.

I get an error message that the file is version 15.x.xxxx and I'm running 14.x.xxx and should upgrade.
Unless the file uses features only available in the latest version, you can do a Save As and specify and older version.

5 sided polygon at 273.5mm gives 520mm measurement from star point to star point from original builders after build specs.

another opposing 5 sided polygon at 155mm for internal star points gives a decent fat star.
from the utube video above for building various stars in Sketchup.

a better way to size the polygon is to draw a polygon any size.
Use the measure tool between the two points
Then enter 520mm and ketchup will ask you if you want to resize.
    Click yes.

remove all lines down to a single left piece.

set axis as if piece in flat on mitre saw.

    OK.

    I've completed my first mockup.

Some of the angles were rounded up or down.

So the project didn't fit together all that well.

    Maybe thats woodworking.

Anyone have any techniques for cutting more accurately on the mitre saw?

If the bevel is 41.5, is there a way to get 41.5? etc.

    Barry

    two options spring to mind

Set the blade to 30° (say) and use a secondary MDF table to angle the work -- will require some trial and error cutting.
The principle is the same as that behind using a crown moulding jg like this one from Kreg.

    2. Use a custom mitre shooting board to angle the work to a hand plane
