    Default Licence renewal.

My driving licence was recently due for renewal. It is a "Medium Rigid" as
I had a stint at driving buses for some eight years. However I retired from
    that some nine years ago.
Now that I am over 75 years of age I certainly have no plans to resume
    bus driving.
I had my photo taken, answered the questions on the form, e.g. I have no
medical disabilities which would affect my driving but answered truthfully
that I am on medication. I do enjoy good health and have an accident
free record and class myself as a careful driver.
A week later my licence arrived in the mail so everything seemed ok.

Another week or so later another letter arrived claiming that because I was
on medication I had to get a letter from my doctor showing that I was in
good health, that I had no medical problems and had to undergo an eyesight
test. Once again, all ok. Paperwork despatched - no further action anticipated.

This week, another letter from Vic Roads. Because my licence is "Medium Rigid"
and involves driving heavier vehicles I now need a letter from my cardiologist
to state I am fit to drive. I am now sending them another reply to ask them
to downgrade my licence to a regular car licence. The way things are going
the three year licence will expire before this is sorted out.

If it was not true, it would be a joke but we must keep the public servants in a job.
    Thanks for the warning.
I will now expect the same when my "Heavy Rigid" licence is due for renewal in a couple of years time.

    Hi,
In the ACT you have to have a medical every year from 75 on-wards. The license is still for 3 years but if you fail the medical before it is up it is canceled. You can also end up with restrictions - so many Ks from home, no night driving etc.
    Regards

    Actually it,s 5 years not 3

They can put the same restrictions on you down here also.

We were fortunate that both my father and father-in-law decided to hand their licences in when they realised that they should not have been driving.

I had a few problems with my licence after I was diagnosed with diabetes.
In WA (probably the same in all states) once diagnosed with detrain conditions you are required to register your condition with the licensing authorities otherwise if you have a vehicle related accident your insurance may not cover you.
So I did this by phone and they said they would send me a a form to fill out and return.

The form never did reach reach me and some time elapsed.

The day before I was due to fly overseas I received a phone call from licensing that I had 24 hours to return the form or my licence would be suspended.
Naturally I did say "what form" and after a bit of an argument they provided me with an address where I could download the form.
That's when I saw that I needed a letter from my GP and if I wanted to retain my Heavy Rigid licence I would need a letter from my cardiologist.
Fortunately my GP is also a good friend and was able to do it for me within a couple of hours but there was no way I could get the letter from my cardiologist in that time so I decided to forgo that part of the licence.

It's interesting that a cardiologist letter is required for the "Heavy Rigid" but not the K-class (unlimited) MC licence.
I guess that's related to how many other people you could take out in event of a medical emergency?

I have just had my HR downgraded to LR for medical reasons and it is the first thing to be taken away from me due to old age and I expect it won't be the last so I had better get used to it. All this paperwork must drive the medical profession mad.

Al, you should tell them that the medication is because you have a poor tolerance for shiny bum, pen pushing, bureaucrats.

My 90 year old neighbour said to me the other day "I've never had an accident, but by God I've caused a few!!!!!!"
He's now a bigger menace on the road with a gopher.

Queensland transport are also great. I was diagnosed with Diabetes a couple of years ago. Queensland Transport need a yearly medical for my MC licence this is always completed by my Endocrinologist, he is always very happy with my control. I tried to renew my Dangerous Goods Licence which is a three year licence, at the same time supplying a medical form. I was passing a large office, not the usual one, so off I went.

Me: I am here to renew my DG Licence
Girl behind the counter: Your medical is only for a year
Me: Yes that's what QT request
Girl: But the DG Licence is for three years, i can't issue the licence
Me: Yes in a year I will supply another medical, as QT request, you even send me a reminder for another yearly medical
Girl: But the DG Licence is for three years, i can't issue the licence
Me: QT will not accept a medical for three years, it's your rules, so next year I will supply another medical, it's your rules
Girl: But the DG Licence is for three years, i can't issue the licence
Me: Yes I know the medical is only for a year, QT tell you that, then I have to renew my medical next year.
Girl: But the DG Licence is for three years, i can't issue the licence, I will ask my supervisor.

Off she goes, comes back to tell me that same thing. By the way I am a Dangerous Goods Trainer and deal with aspects of licencing everyday.

Me: So QT tell me I have to renew my medical every year
    Girl: Yes
Me: So I will need a medical to cover three years of the DG licence.
    Girl: Yes
Me: Do you have a medical form which covers three years
Girl: No, they only cover one year
Me: That's what I have, here it is
Girl: But the DG Licence is for three years, i can't issue the licence
    Me: *******

Half an hour of my life wasted with an oxygen thief. Next day at another QT office, which I know is very efficient. I explained what happened. This older lady told me that's where they put all the trainee's, and no hopers. The supervisors know nothing she also told me. She advised me not to go back there as everyone has problems there, they don't know about anything but normal licences. 3 minutes later I walked out all done. Why do the have someone working at a QT main office issuing licences who does not understand their own requiments.

I have a heart condition and have carried a "Jets law" medical certificate for about nine years so I'm pretty familiar with the process now.

I went through a similar process to "domjill" with QLD Transport except that last year they were not going to amend an incorrect spelling of my name on my licence (typo of their doing - transposed two letters) or reissue it because of "irregularities" with my medical certificate - the names did not match - really! The letter accompanying the form clearly states that I do not have to present the new medical certificate each year if the medical conditions do not change after the original certificate is presented to QT. The CSO & Supervisors (three of) then argued the point - reckoned I now had a lapsed licence because I did not present the medical certificate.... yadda yadda .... you can't drive ... will now have to go through road rules & practical test because your licence technically expired three months ago because you didn't present the medical certificate.... all BS.

Four hours later it was resolved after several trips back & forth and half the bl**dy office staff involved. Even took back a copy of the previous licence to prove the typo in my name was created with that reissue of my licence. I also did not have to present the certificate each year - I just have to carry a current medical certificate at all times if the conditions are unchanged.

The problem I had was the same as above - the customer service officer & supervisors at the new office knew even less than I did about the "Jets Law" medical certificate requirements. No apology from the CSO or the Supervisors though - here is your licence - now bugger off..

This year went though the same process again even the letter had the same clause re unchanged medical conditions - fortunately I got a very good CSO and all went quite smoothly for QT.

Me too. In Canberra I had the audacity to stop for a light changing from orange to red.
Got hit in the back. Two different times.
Also gave away at a roundabout and got backstabbed again.....
