comp probs
Hi all, seeking some thoughts from the brains trust on a couple of puter probs,
namely,
1. the pointer won't move at odd times, move the mouse and pointer just sits, can't do anything much without the pointer, have to restart comp.
2. last couple of days it doesn't want to start, just starts a frenetic beeping a few seconds after turning on, seems to be intermitant, sometimes is OK other times it won't go. At the moment it is being left on as it might not start.
Is it a virus or something else, the comp is getting on a bit now 4 or 5ish yrs? AVG did get rid of a 2 things the other day.

Not sure about the first problem. Could be virus related, could be a driver issue (something in the driver conflicting with something that's been recently updated), could be a hardware problem, could be phase of the moon!
For the second problem, beeps at startup are there to tell you that something's wrong. One beep - usually means all OK. More than one - "something is broken/breaking". The number of beeps will tell you what has failed the POST (Power On Self Test). The "translation" of beeps to problem will depend on the BIOS that the manufacturer uses on your computer.
Google for "manafacturer" pc bios beep codes (without the quotes) which should be a good starting point to tell you what's wrong.
Another possible (non-technical option) is that there's a problem with your keyboard and a key switch is stuck down, but you'd probably notice this when you were using the computer. This will usually cause a lot of beeping at startup as the keyboard buffer fills up.
Good luck!

Cheers for that WP, I think the first is a phase of the moon thing? I'll make a note on the moon phases
I've had to restart it a few times (mouse/pointer) issue and so far no incessant beeping, next time I'll take note of the number of beeps and which BIOS I have and we shall go from there.

I'd say it is a hardware fault & I'd bet it was the motherboard.

If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.
