Dodgy Email Warning
This is just a heads up for forum users. This morning I received a dodgy email titled "Your Internet Service is going to be suspended"
The email is sent from a private account in a .com domain and purports to be from the "Internet Service Consortium". It alleges they they have monitored all of my Internet activity for the past six months, and because I have been downloading illegal copies of software (I haven't), they will be having my service provider suspend my intenet access for three months or terminate it.
The text of the message is almost convincing except for the obvious typos etc. ( I know I normally manage some but go and reread/correct before posting a message)
It also implores me to open the attached ZIP file which purports to show a log of all of the software that I have illegally downloaded. While I have not examined the content of the Zip file, I believe that it is extremely likely that it will contain some sort of nasty.
I very strongly suggest that anyone getting a similar message not open the zip file, or do anything else with it.
It seems to be a good ploy, accuse someone of something and supply the evidence against them at the same time. Horrified/indignant etc victim opens the evidence file and unleashes nice creepies through their system before they discover that its a hoax.
DO NOT LET EMOTION OVERCOME COMMON SENSE IF YOU GET A SIMILAR MESSAGE

I've seen a similar mail and I did open the attachment (I run Linux). It did contain a known Trojan - can't recall what it was right now.
I also received the same attachment on a mail message warning about a nuclear accident in Sydney a couple of days ago. No sigh of a mushroom cloud as yetGeoff

We have had a couple a lot like those ones at work recently, but the one that amazes me is connected to Delta airways.
It states that your tickets are ready, click on the attached link and make your payment,
Delta had a warning on their site stating it had nothing to do with them and not to open up any attachment as they could contain a number of nasties.
This one was sent to a lady that my wife cares for and she got into a bit of a panic about it as she thought at first that someone had got all her details and made this booking.
She is not a young person but luckily had looked into it and not follow through with it, but unfortunately there are a lot of others who aren't and loose heaps to these mongrels who set these things up.

The one I get regularly is from Google add words. My account has expired so could it reactivate it.
Never had a Google Add Word in the first place but I bet it catches some companies.

Had a new mail oddbod tonight. LOML wanted be to check the laptop because when she went to connect to the mail server to download her mail, she kept getting a very normal looking box come with her username, the correct number off asterics for her password etc., the Remember Password box not ticked and the mail programme itself was reporting problems loging in to the mail server as the password was incorrect.
Since we both have our mail passwords stored in the mail client I was suspicious and would not enter a password into the window. Instead, I closed the window and mail client and went to Control Panel to check on the info that way. The same box was showing normally there indicating that the password should be stored. I reentered the password, saved it and went back to the client which did the same thing again.
I then went onto the web and changed LOML's password on the mail server, changed it on the laptop through Control Panel, and reloaded the client. Still hapenning.
Switched users to my account and mine was doing it as well. Set that laptop down doing a full vius scan and went to the next computer .
Same issues both accounts, left it doing a full scan.
All AV fully updated, but neither scan found anything except tracking cookies. Quarantined and deleted all tracking cookies on both machines and checked mail clients again. First computer client worked OK both accounts, second computer I still had to change LOML's password in Control Panel, then client OK on both accounts.
I suspect some sort of phishing activity, but the scans could not detect it, and it disappeared after the scans had run, even without a reboot to clear it out of memory. Now got to go and check sort the rest of the computers as well.
