An icon appeared on my laptop, I don't know whether to try it or if it maybe some bug waiting to bite me . I really don't see any value in it for me so I'm leaving it alone for now.

I've put my reservation in for both my laptop and desktop. I'll try it on the lappy first as i don't use it for any critical work.
Are you running 7 or 8 George, I'm still using 7.To grow old is inevitable.... To grow up is optional

I'm using 8.1 and I hate it. I've disabled some of it and use 3rd party software for some things, namely email and browser.
I've just had a look through the Win10 list of improvements and while they have removed some of the more annoying features It's pretty ho hum as far as I'm concerned. I'll probably upgrade for free and still use the 3rd party software.
And why do we have to reserve a copy? It's not an actual disk or anything. It's a download. Those were the droids I was looking for.

I suppose the big question is, can you roll back to your previous version if it goes pear shaped?

To be honest, even if it malfunctioned and was almost impossible to use it would still be better than Win8. did I mention I dislike Win8?
I think I read that once you upgrade it is permanent. Those were the droids I was looking for.

Win7 is quite okay but I've heard heaps of bad reports about Win8....
But why would or do we who are happy with Win7 need to upgrade to Win10??

Well, on the 7 vs. 8 issue, a major sticking point for me - as I do a lot of moving large files around - was the poor file copy dialogue in 7 and how it would jump around: "17 seconds remaining....46 seconds remaining...2 days 4 hours remaining...1 minute 8 seconds remaining". Much, much improved in 8 as it intelligently manages copy requests.
10 is basically the "You still haven't forgiven us for Windows 8, have you, even though we sacked the executive in charge of it?" edition.
So it's kind of like 8.1, but with still more of the annoying bits removed, like the stupid charms bar. I'll be installing 10, but on a fresh SSD.

So if we don't want Windows 10, how do we get rid of the little icon in the task bar?

Remove Windows Update KB3035583. That'll end the notification.
