HL-3040CN Toner problem.
Just purchased and fitted compatible toner cartridges to my Brother HL-3040CN printer. On restarting the printer received error message "Replace Toner. Open the top cover, replace Toner Cartridge. Cyan (C).". On checking with toner supplier, they inform I need to reset the colours in the printer then it will work. They sent a list of instructions to accomplish this as below;
- Open the front cover (toner bay).
- restart the printer with the front cover opened
- Press the "Cancel" and "Secure" buttons simultaneously until you see the "reset" menu appear.
- PRESS UP AND DOWN ARROWS TO GET TO SPECIFIC TONER COLOR TO RESET.
- Press the "OK" button.
- Press the 'up' arrow and note the word "Accept".
- Press "OK" again.
- REPEAT FOR EACH TONER COLOR
Tried this on my printer but does work (instructions appear not to be for my printer). Printer will not do anything with the toner bay open. With cover closed, on pressing the "Cancel" and "Secure" buttons simultaneously the action takes me nowhere.
If I press any key a menu becomes available, and by using the up or down keys I am able to reach a menu selection of ‘Reset menu’. If I input the ‘OK’ key to accept this menu, I am given a menu selection of ‘Reset printer’. If I input the ‘OK’ key to accept this menu, I am given a menu selection of ‘OK?, if I input the ‘OK’, I return back ‘Reset printer’. Have gone back to supplier but as yet no reply.
Anyone able to assist in correcting the problem so as I can use the printer or should I fit genuine toner cartridges.

are they brother cartridges? I have the same printer, and have only ever purchased official cartridges and have not experienced any problems with new cartridges.
If they're after market cartridges perhaps the software won't recognize them thus the error message? Maybe when you select "reset printer" it is resetting it but the factory settings are the same ones you're working with so no real change?
I'm no tech guru so can't really help other than my experiences I'm sorry"All the gear and no idea"

I presume you removed the sealing strip from the new cartridge? If the cartridge you bought is a refilled unit, you may get this error message. Apparently there is a chip that counts rotations in each of the cartridges as well as an optical sensor. Replace cartridge messages can be triggered by either and on refilled cartridges apparently the counter can't be reset.
Most reset procedures state the same as you posted.
