Andrew, have you had any experience running wireless networking (in Linux)?

asg got it right, 8.04 is Hardy Heron, not Feisty Fawn as I stated (Feisty was 7.04)

I'm currently running wireless on Linux (Centos 5) if I can help, just ask.

    Default Try Linux Mint

    Try Linux Mint. http://www.linuxmint.com/

I have put this on an old Compaq laptop, and it works well. Wireless was easy to get going, and even Wireless broadband works.
It was distributed on a dvd with a computer magazine, but can be downloaded from the above site. It is based on Ubuntu.

Um, well, sort of. I'm certainly no expert on the subject.

Some wireless chipsets are supported by linux and they just work.

Most other chipsets will work with a linux package called ndiswrapper which is a kind of "wrapper" around the native windows drivers that are supplied on the CD with the wireless card. It can be a bit of a pain to set up, but it mostly works - its what I'm using now. I recall spending quite a bit of time trawling through the ubuntu forums to find out how to set it up.
