loading photos from camera to computer.
Hi, I had to get a new computer, it might be Intel Core i3. The place where I purchased it transferred all the stuff off the hard drive of the old one onto the new one.
Old computer had a port for the camera sd card and would only load up new photos and ignore previously loaded photos. The new computer doesn't appear to have a sd card port so I have to use the USB cable supplied with the camera. Problemo! the computer wants to load all the photos in the camera (over 1700).
One option I've thought of is to just buy a new card and start afresh assuming that the computer will load subsequent photos and ignore previously loaded ones as my old computer did. I would ring the tech where I bought it but I'm sure he'll use technical language that will leave me more confused than I already am.
I thought someone here may be able to use more neanderthal friendly language.
Thanks in advance,
Geoff.

Hey Geoff,
A couple of questions:
- What operating system are you using on the new computer?
- Are you using the default photo viewing program that came with the operating system or software that came with the camera?
Having a 2nd SD card is always a good thing, but I wouldn't worry about buying a SD card reader. Transferring files using USB cable is perfectly fine.
I suspect that you may need to do a complete download (all 1700+ pics) and then continue as normal. It may be a datestamp issue of the files transferred from the old hard drive to new, and then the camera not being able to match the files with what's stored on the camera.
I personally delete all files off my memory cards after each day/weekend of shooting, once they have been backed up. I also then backup those files to cloud storage and to a NAS device, but some call me paranoid...

In WIN 10 and I imagine most if not all systems when it gets to the import page it should be possible to select what photos you want imported. When I import my photos I always tick the "delete images from camera" box so the camera memory is always empty. if I was in your position I would import the lot and keep the ones I want and delete the rest just to clear the camera. This question might be better asked in the photographic forum and there is a link on the top of this page to that.

Hi Geoff
although your new computer has all the photos previously stored on the old one, the new computer doesn't know that it has these photos.
An analogy
the old computer used postit notes to keep track of your SD card and what had been copied across to the computer.
when you replaced the computer, all the old postit notes stayed with the old computer.
What I suggest you do is
1. manually copy any recent photos from the SD card (camera) to the computer
2. create a separate folder called "SD Card Feb 2018"
3. import everything on the SD card to this folder.
4. next time you sync the camera and computer, your computer should recognise that the stuff already on the card has been copied across and restrict itself to only copying the new files.regards from Alberta, Canada

Thanks for your replys,
I've got two cards with the camera, one I use for day to day photos and when I load them on the computer I title them appropriately, ie family (ocassion), holiday (somewhere) etc. The other card is used when cataloguing tools in my collection and they go into the computer under the title "Tool Register". Both cards are 32GB and my idea is you can view them on a computer when you're visiting friends in other parts of the world. When the sd card is full just buy another one.
I'm using Windows 7.
I've taken your advice Ian, followed the steps and it has worked perfectly. After I imported all the photos I went outside, took 2 more and the computer was quite happy to import just those two.
Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate it.
Cheers,
Geoff.
