Screen freezes up
For the last couple of weeks my screen has been simply stopping in it's tracks and there does not appear to be any consistency to it. I can open half a dozen emails successfully then it will freeze up on the next. I click "Reset" on the computer then wait for it to go through it's cycle which takes ages then go back to emails where it works perfectly again.
It also happens if I type a letter, when I get to the end and want to save the file it freezes up again. I go through the "Reset" again and invariably find that it is gone. On occasions it may re-appear but only in part. The first 3-4 paragraphs are there but not the latter part of the message.
It seems to occur with monotonous regularity when I finish one programme, e.g. Facebook and then try to open Woodwork Forms immediately after. Once again it freezes up.
I run Firefox on my Intel Pentium which has always worked ok but at the moment it is
driving me nutty.
Ten minutes ago I typed this message, clicked "Submit New Thread" and it froze up again.
If it does it again this time I am going to bed and sulk. (lol).Life is short ... smile while you still have teeth.

A few technical details which I just looked at which may help.
Pentium (R) Dual core CPU
E5200 @ 2.50 GHz
2.50 GHz 2.99 GB of RAM
Physical address extension
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service pack 3
Maybe I have had it more than 8 years - can't remember whether
it has been updated and when. (I must be getting too old).Life is short ... smile while you still have teeth.

Do you know how one dog year is the equivalent of 7 human years?
Well, one computer year is the equivalent of 25 human years.
Yup, that means your computer is now about 200 years old.
I reckon it will be the motherboard but you won't be able to just buy a replacement motherboard.
A new motherboard won't work with your old RAM & CPU & it won't work properly with Win XP either.Cliff.

Next time it freezes, hit CTRL, ALT, DEL at the same time and see if Task Manager comes up on the screen. If it does, it’s most likely a program freezing. If it does come up click “task manager “ and see if there is a program not responding rather that a complete computer freeze

When it freezes up, can you move your mouse?
If you can, then the possibilities are potentially software related or may be a bad sector on your hard disk. You could open a command prompt as admin (Start, All Programs, Accessories, find Command Prompt, right click and "Open as Administrator"), then in the black box type sfc /scannow. Post your results. After that, type chkdsk c: /f/r and restart the computer when prompted. You'll get a message after restarting in your system tray (near the clock) - let us know what it says please.
If you can not move the mouse, then it might be ram or mainboard. You can test memory using memtest86 (https://www.memtest86.com).
Post results of this please.
If you need more info or have questions, please post back

Hi all,
Many thanks for taking the time to respond. I finally "cracked a wobbly" and purchased a new computer.
It has Windows 10 and is as fast as greased lightning. However it has given me more problems as my
existing scanner wont work with it. Apparently is is because it is 18 years old ... I thought it was supposed
to last forever. I think my printer has the same problem ... I contacted Fuji and they told me that
my DocuPrint P115w is not compatible with Windows 10.
Oh well, part with a few more shillings I suppose and get myself up to date.
Thanks for trying.Life is short ... smile while you still have teeth.

After much hassling I have Windows 10, Word & Windows 2016 and my FujiXerox all working ok.
Scanner does not want to cooperate but that is not the end of the world.
Interestingly the computer shop recovered all my files and transferred them to the new computer
and you can imagine my surprise to see 12,400 previously deleted emails back in my Inbox.
I have now deleted them all again (50 at a time) and all seems ok.
Windows 10 has many variations compared to XP but I am slowly coming to terms with it.
Many thanks to you all for your assistance.Life is short ... smile while you still have teeth.

Your mail program may have been set to leave a copy on the server.
I have seen that happen a couple of times, there were a couple of versions of Outlook that defaulted to leave a copy on the server.Cliff.
