Like DC air flow specs, SD card speeds specs are usually not worth the ink used to write the labels.
Without actual testing you will never know the real specs.
Tale a look at this review of card speeds for a so called same class of card where File copy times differed by more than 100%
https://petapixel.com/2017/08/10/mar...l-world-speed/
This test was for well known brands - the situation with less brands would be anyones guess
Over the last year or so I have bought a range of SD cards for my dust particle counter data storage. As speed and size are non-issues I usually buy the cheaper, smaller, slower SD cards on eBay for about $10 although I do have some larger/faster/branded ones that I swing in from time to time.
The main problems I'm having with the budget level cards are with their contacts, and the no-write locks. Sometimes just inserting these cards into the SD slot will sometimes move the lock into the locked position.

There are three difference measurements for each card... bus speed, (video) speed class and application performance class.
Bus speed is about the low level electrical signalling between the card and the host (PC, DAP, etc). This limits the speed you can read and write the data. For audio files you typically looking at fairly small data rates. For uncompressed 16-bit, 44.1k stereo it is something like 180 kB/s, so a standard SD 12.5 MB/s is sufficient. Of course the advantage of the faster (SDHC, SDXC) is you spend less time copying data onto the card... Somewhat technical information on bus speed can be found here https://www.sdcard.org/developers/ov...eed/index.html.
Speed classes are described here: https://www.sdcard.org/developers/ov...ass/index.html. These are as mentioned about sequential write speeds. There is some overlap between them with the C10 and U1 basically the same. Again, C10/U1 is much faster that what you would require for audio, but again relates to the time taken to write to the card.
The A1 is for Application Performance Class https://www.sdcard.org/developers/ov...ion/index.html which is more about random reads/writes. If you are doing audio playback that's not so important, except for perhaps when you are looking what song to play.
But that is what the specifications say, individual items may vary.
I would be surprised if they don't work in the DAP, although at $WORK we recently had a problem with a device which tried to use an SD card at high speed, but didn't have the appropriate voltage control circuitry to switch from 3.3V to 1.8V. Much hilarity (and lack of working) prevailed. This, if anything, is a reason why not necessarily buying the cheapest SD card reader might be good advice (although it wasn't applicable in our case, since the device that couldn't do the reading properly cost $3000).
Hopefully, I've not confused you further with extraneous details. Much like others have said, for digital audio the requirements are fairly low.

I'm not really concerned with speed - as Ian points out, it's music not video, and nor can I double up the cards for camera use, as that is a Compact Flash card. All I want is 256Gb of reliable storage, but I just don't want to purchase something from the States that is incorrect. I'm pretty sure it will be ok, just a bit spooked by the differences in what are described as the same thing.
Now just in case there may be a perception out there that I'm a tech clutz who doesn't like change.....the clutz bit is prolly largely correct but I don't mind a change if there's a reason for it.
To wit: I have just moved on to my second Nokia 6110 Navigator phone, much to the mirth of those around me (NCArcher, Pac Man et al). The first, purchased in mid 2007, gave me yeoman service until a month or so ago - that's right, nearly 11 years. However the slider was becoming a bit sticky and the killer was that I dropped it the screen was unreadable. I had my partner's white one in the drawer as a spare because she moved on to an iPhone in 2010. It is in near new condition
Funnily enough, it still makes excellent phone calls, as a phone should. Certainly a better microphone than NCA's tinny bloody Samsung slab. It will take a lousy pic or video, I can load music onto it if I wish, and as it's Navigator name implies, it has SatNav.
Wherever I go I seem to be with people who have Smart Slabs and can look up anything reqd, so at the moment I see no need to upgrade. Suits me with my tiny little clear as a bell phone
I also got 9 years out my last laptop. It eventually slowed down, and the lack of support for the fabulous XP forced me to upgrade to Windows 10 POS (and it really is a POS the way it takes over and wants to do things ITS way GGrrrrr!)

Thanks Iain. It still doesn't explain how the 200Gb card (which appears to be identical in both countries) is about the same price in both countries, but the 256Gb cards are radically different in price.
However, it sounds like I should be ok with the USD99.99 256Gb card. I would prefer the larger card - even though my FLAC files are currently ~160Gb I will need expansion room.

Well this would appear to take the Technological Cake!
The DAP successfully plays through my Koss Earphones (like right now listening to Al Di Meola), and it connects and plays with the Harmon Kardon loudspeaker behind me. All good and working as it should.
I have also successfully connected it to the Mazda. I can scroll up and down through the tracks by using the button on the steering wheel (I can see them changing on the DAP) so there is absolutely no question that they are connected and talking to each other.
Except the tracks just won't play. They will not start playing - permanently on 0.00. Now I may be a tech clutz, but I know a play button when I see one!

Quick answers for you FF
(1) The Extreme Pro card is faster than the one you were looking at on EBay, yes. As you don't have a use for it in your digital camera, I believe the original card model will do you just fine.
(2) Beware of buying any card for your MP3 player over 64Gb in size... the review I linked to said that was the maximum size. Now that you actually have your unit, you should check the manual to see what the maximum capacity is before buying anything. Note that you may not be able to format any card beyond 32Gb as FAT32.
(3) I concur with your view of the life expectancy of the Emtec card. It might be prudent, depending on the cost, to return it to the state it was in (you can do so in disk management by literally deleting the volume on it - note this will destroy all files on the device). At that point, it is as it was when you bought it, and thus not in working order, and could potentially be returned to the supplier?

No, just MP3 files on this little card. I dunno about the "head" unit, but it's linked to the car and I can control it via the car. It's just that it won't play under Bluetooth. Bloody weird.
However, WE HAVES TUNES IN THE CAR! A 3.5mm cable from the "balanced" output jack of the DAP into the AUX IN jack of the car works. Thank gawd fer that. Talk about pulling teeth.....
I would still like to get to the bottom of the BT mystery though because it may rear its ugly head in another vehicle next week.

My best guess would be that when you link via bluetooth, the car reads the file and tries to play it - it's doing the interpretation of the file and playing itself.
When you link by audio cable, your player is doing the work.
Again, just a guess!

Hmmm But that would mean that the car is stopping the DAP from playing - that seems very unlikely/weird/w.t.f.

Nup
it's what I would expect.
Step through it "logically"
Car radio -- internal
car CD -- internal
Car USB -- internal
Aux Jack -- external
Phone via blue tooth -- car does the "work" but uses the phone for "authorisation"
DAP via bluetooth -- as per a phone connectionregards from Alberta, Canada
