Thread: Which Smartphone?
-
22nd September 2018, 10:52 AM #91
I understand that Android is the operating system, and that each manufacturer has their own user interface that works out of that.
The problem is that neither system has any documentation. SUre I can ask questions, and sure I can search for something on the net....if I know that something exists. Where it becomes seriously difficult is trying to find out about the stuff I don't know exists, whatever that may be. How do you ask about stuff you don't know the existence of?
So to ask the question of the current problem again: does anyone know what is good software for transferring files (specifically music files) from a laptop to a smartphone please?

Hi Brett
this was my Google query "google play transfer music to Android phone"
this was the boxed "answer" at the top of the list of returned items
Load music onto your device using a USB cable
- Download and install Android File Transfer on your computer.
- If your screen is locked, unlock your screen.
- Connect your computer to your device using a USB cable. ...
- Locate music files on your computer and drag them into your device's Music folder in Android File Transfer.
Transfer music from a computer to your phone or tablet - Google Play ...

Can't comment on how "good" it is, but the process appears to be akin to using Apple's iTunes to move stuff from a computer to an iThingyregards from Alberta, Canada

Thanks Ian.
I did a similar search a couple of days ago, and from what I could gather there was a special app needed, so I downloaded one but it was looking a bit dodgy (and unhelpful) so I deleted it.
As it turns out there is no app required at all! This link to a computerworld vid explains it quite simply (although it did take me a while to find the "Use USB to..." bar, but that was because there were a stack of unread notifications.
So once this has been checked "File Transfer" it is a simple matter of drag and drop (as I always thought it would be.....). What is very odd is that you have to tell it what you want to USB cable for (only 3 options, charging, file transfer and photo transfer), so I don't see why something that is so smart than it can outsmart itself can't do all three at any old time.
The very first intuitive thing I did (yesterday) was to plug in the USB, open the phone and try to drag and drop music files but it didn't want to play. Never heard of having to tell a USB what it's supposed to do before.

I located a User Guide for the Mi 6 which is very useful, but I assume it is only explaining the MIUI rather than Android itself. I don't know what it doesn't cover of course, but almost everything matched up. Got a few widgets working, and they're pretty cool actually, esp Gmail and Calendar.
Had a look at a few Youtube reviews of the Mi 8 - they seem to be very current (like 2 days old). A German guy regards Xiaomi as the Apple of China. Another reviewer says that the Mi 8 is aimed squarely at competing with the iPhone X for a lot less Yuan (about a third the Chinese price). Another guy says that the Pocophone 1 (also made by Xiaomi) is a better phone for less money (USD300) but apparently he is unaware that it is less specced up than the Mi 8. They all seem to agree that you get a lot of phone for much less dough than the competitors with more established names.
Anyhoo, it seems that with the help of all of you I have made a good solid purchase which should last for .... Jeez, two years at least! So thank you all!
Oh, and the Powerhouse Museum have offered me $200 for my 11 year old still functioning perfectly Nokia 6110 Navigator, which comes with spare battery.

Probably time now to start looking at Internet surfing. Is there an app that people use for the Forums? Is that Tapatalk or is there a specific app?

Geez, it seems that people are rather unhappy about it, as of the end of 2017:

So do you see many ads - are they intrusive?

I use Tapatalk Pro on my iPhone and there are no ads.
I also have Tapatalk which is the free version and it generally has an ad about every ninth thread or post depending if you’re looking at New Posts or the posts within the thread.
This is a screenshot from my iPhone showing the ad on the free version.

Could the battery be buggered already?
The Mi 8 is now eight months old. I am not an excessive user of it - very light use indeed.
Up until a week or two ago I would charge it every 3-4 days, say twice per week, and it would say I had fifty something hours running time left (based on what it was doing right then I suppose). Suddenly it has to be charged every day, and I'm pretty sure that yesterday it said I had a lousy 13 hours usage after the charge.
There is no difference in my usage whatsoever. I regularly close down background apps (perhaps 2-3 times per day).
Bluetooth is off, and only goes on when I get in the car, and that might be once or twice per week.
What could cause such a dramatic turnaround in such a young phone, and so suddenly?

I forgot to add that I use a 20,000 maH Power Bank to charge it, which means it "Charges Fast". Initially I wasn't sure if this was ok on a regular basis, but research showed that only older Li Ion batteries can have a problem with rapid charging.
Furthermore I would expect that if it was going to be a problem it would be a gradual deterioration in battery performance, not like the guillotine that it was.
