In case you're still looking, this looks like a great buy:

    "4GB, 64GB, 5.99" Full Screen, Dual Camera, Snapdragon 636 Octa Core, 4000mAh"

Great specs (including a BIG battery) and the phone forums I subscribe to suggest you can have one landed her for ~ AUD$300

I'll chime in for Xiaomi as well. Redmi Note 4x and 5s in this household, I just ordered a Note 5 for a friend that dropped her Samsung. Also bought a tablet for my mother. All have been great.

I am a freak and have promised myself that the last three phones will be the last Windows phone I will own, I currently have a HP one and it is pretty crazy for an old phone. It has a dock that is connected to the TV and a HDD, it can dual screen so I can use the phone as a phone and type out emails from a BT keyboard, the phone can also act as a mouse which is handy if you wirelessly connect to a screen. It came with a 12.5" dumb terminal laptop thingy which is of limited use, the speakers and screen are nice.

I wouldn't recommend Windows phone to anyone, there are almost no apps, updates are now for security only, MS follow through with no promises, they seem to remove functionality for fun and they sold off their good map system to VW. A few years ago I could point my phone at a bus stop and it would tell me which buses stop there and the arrival times, it also include train timetables so you could plan a whole trip, it worked OS too. If you laid the phone flat it would show a map, if you tilted the camera up it would go to augmented reality showing all local businesses and you could check out their description/reviews, it was sad to lose all that.

A few months ago I went to an Xperia XA2 as I planned to go to the independent OS from Jolla but the phone was a piece of garbage and luckily developed a fault so I got a full refund.

As you people like things that last these are a pretty cool option as they are modular, so if something like your camera dies you just buy a new module and fit it at home. There is a new model coming out later this year and it may support running Jolla's Sailfish 3 OS.

This looks pretty good. 25% off the Xiaomi Mi 8 starting in 20 minutes time. They have 200 in stock, so I think I might bite the bullet on one, for around $570 Aussie.

The battery is not replaceable, unless I'm reading the specifications incorrectly.

I have a Huawei GR3, which is great, but the battery after a couple of years is starting to drop off a little. I knew the battery was non replaceable, but according to Huawei in Australia, they can replace it. When the time comes, I'll cross that bridge.

Well how bloody frustrating! The website won't work for me. I've created an account, but select options on the phone (like Add Glass Film, or Colour) just don't work, nor can I add it to the cart or Buy now.

Gets 4.4 stars on GSMArena so should be a great phone. In a perfect world of course it would include a 3.5mm jack, a microSD slot and wireless charging but for the money it sounds like a good deal. Unfortunately batteries are the Achilles heel of most smartphones, and I don't know too many with a replaceable battery on the market at the moment...

Funny, I was able to add to the cart the previous Xiaomi that you linked to, so maybe I have to back out and go in again.

Lack of a 3.5mm jack wouldn't bother me because I have a separate DAP for full resolution music (which has a 3.5mm, and a smaller one for Balanced output if I want it).

Ok, so it seems that replaceable batteries are rare for smartphones? It seems the Samsung S8 and S8+ has them. I think it is probably worth paying a little extra for a phone where the battery can be replaced, as long as the phone is good quality and can be expected to last perhaps 4-5 years. Non-replaceable batteries would be a deal killer for me buying a second hand phone. One never knows the condition of a battery and they can fall off a cliff very quickly indeed.

OTOH, Aldi have just had refurbished iPhone 6 on sale for about $470. A used IThing would not necessarily go against my principles because Apple don't make anything out of it. Having said that, they are more than likely sold out as they went on sale a week ago - it would be one of the Aldi sale things that walk out the door in the first 30 minutes.

make sure you've selected each option. Not necessarily the most intuitive website, but once you figure it out you'll be ok.

Well that's just it - it won't let me select any options. So I tried the 6Gb 128Gb version - same deal.
