I've had a 32GB SSD in a Dell for three years. It's now older technology, and the new ones are better, but the read speed is great - pgms open very quickly. Saving on this one is about the same as a normal drive (if not slightly slower) but my understanding is that this is where they have "picked up speed".

I got it because, as a Mortgage Broker then, I needed absolute reliability, and could not afford to have a head crash. It cost an extra $1200 then, but they are much cheaper and bigger now.

    HTH.

I've just recently installed a 120gb SSD in my i7 Toshiba laptop and reinstalled the operating system onto it. It's cut my startup time into Windows 7 by at least 75% and launching programs is incredibly fast now. It's also extended the battery life quite a bit since it uses less power than a normal disc drive and the laptop seems to generate less heat.

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend using an SSD, especially in a laptop.

I recently built a new system based on a Patriot 60GB SSD. It works however there is a problem with this particular drives chipset coming out of standby in Windows 7. For the moment I am simply powering down rather than letting the machine go to sleep. The boot speed from the drive is such that it is not much of an issue, virtually instant on compared to my xp system.

There are some blogs about the problem and a firmware update from another manufacturer apparently might fix the problem but I have not got around to trying to fix it yet.

I went with the Patriot because it was cheapest SSD I could find locally. Other drives with different chipsets don't have the problem. Check the specs before you buy.

    Inferno 60gb boot issues......

My friend just replace the 5400 rpm harddisk of Dell D430 laptop with a SSD. It runs like a rocket! Transfer rate wooping jump from 20-40 MB/sec to 120 MB/sec.

Newer generation of SSD from OCZ and Intel runs at 500+ MB/sec. It's another revolution of PC.
