John, I think you have to make Thunderbird your default mailer.
If you're using XP, try clicking 'start' > 'Set program access and defaults' > and set the defaults in the non-microsoft section. Or it might be in the 'custom' section. Sorry, don't have XP in front of me, going on memory, (oh dear)
Hope this is of some help

There is a down arrow next to the get mail icon in the top left hand corner, click it and select the account you want and it should download the messages off the server.
If you open outlook first then it would have already downloaded the messages off the server unless you tell it to leave them there.Collector of cheap throw away tools.

Uninstall outlook. That will stop it.
or
In the accounts settings of outlook you are looking for the box that says
"leave messages on server" untick it
or
Just tell it not to check for new mail

If he uninstalls outlook he might loose all his emails, unless he backs them up. Do you get any error messages? I haven't used outlook for years since first switching to Netscape and now thunderbird.

thank you all for your help, however I decided to uninstall thunderbird becuase of problems.
1 The text size kept changing probably my fault but no matter what i did it would not stay at the size designated.
2 After a few usages of thunderbird everything I clicked on flickerd and i could not open anything, I would then go to Outlook and that would do the same, to the extent I could not use either. Since I unistalled thunderbird all is now OK.
A pity
Thank you for your help
