WIN10 Restore Point - Heads Up
I had a an issue with my computer the other day and went to use the last restore point to see if that fixed it and lo and behold it was gone! it turns out that when MS do an automatic upgrade to WIN10 they wipe out all the restore points. All I can say is be warned and yes I did have a few choice words to say about the stupidity of it all.

Automatic upgrade, from Windows 7?
Then yeah, hanging on to those old restore points would be just a waste of space. If you mean something else, let me know.

Sorry, wrong terminology Mark, no it was an update to WIN10 about 10 days ago. I did the 7 to 10 update as soon as it was available last year.

MS current upgrade for Win10 is version 1607 which added new features, hence it isn't a update therefore the removal of restore points.

Yes, maybe but you would think that they would put a restore point back in when they do it. As it turned out a restore point was not necessary but it might have been. The last update on this computer was not the anniversary version, that had already been done some time before. What new features got added at 1607?

So that's what happens? I knew I wasn't totally crazy!
My system has died twice in two months, once I used MS's compatibility mode for a driver and I could no longer boot.
A few days ago I installed an update then rebooted and it worked fine, put it to sleep overnight and it was dead again. I have no idea what happened, I assumed the MBR had been corrupted, it looked fine but my computer just came straight to a black screen and that was it.
For some odd reason I selected IDE for the HDD in BIOS and that allowed me to get it far enough to try a repair then I could boot in Safe Mode and after that it was fine.
I wish I was smart enough for Linux.

I have found no reason to hate WIN10, in fact I really do like it, far more so than 7. Like every Windows incarnation it needs to be fiddled with and gotten the way I like it but after that it is fine for me. I have played with Linux but there is no way I am going back to command prompts, I had enough of that in DOS which I think I have successfully forgotten by now. Someone needs to dumb down Windows for the average internet user, email, browser, music and photographs should cover it.
You don't have to be smart for Linux, there are some nice desktop distros out there that will provide everything that the average user needs and it costs nothing to use it. Give it a go, you may find you like it after you get past the differences from Windows.CHRIS

I'm only annoyed because I ran 8 for two years and had very few issues and it was blazingly quick, I didn't like 7 so I never used it, if XP didn't get viruses and allowed me to use lots of RAM I'd still be on it.
I have done a clean install of 10 twice now and updated from 7 and 8 once each.
I'm not sure if some of my issues may be my SSD starting to die, I am more inclined to suspect it is Windows replacing Manufacturer's drivers with generic newer ones.
Hmmmm, I wonder, our internet is very slow and from time to time my computer will start updating and I force it to stop in the Task Manager, wonder if that could be causing me grief?
Windows 10 is still better on a phone than a computer, in my opinion anyway.

You can control when Win 10 updates by going to the Services dialog and disable Windows Updating service.
Go to Windows Administrative Tools menu on the Start tab, select Services. Find Windows Update and right click, select Properties, on the General tab click on Stop, then set Startup Type to Disabled.
When you want to update your computer, just reset Startup type to Manual. Then get Settings from the Start tab, select Update & security, then Check for Updates. Go and have cuppa or a beer whilst Win 10 does it's thing.
I do this to the Men's Shed's laptop, so that Win 10 doesn't use up our limited wireless connection. When it's time to do a update I take it home where I have plenty of capacity and speed.Arie.

I've gone back to 8.1, it's better for me, I did also download Linux so I'll have a play with that soon and I just read that Unix can be installed on a Android phone meaning that I could go Microsoft and Google free. MS seem to be removing useful features and apps from the phones monthly, getting pretty sick of it.
