Default Latest Windows 10 upgrade has royally stuffed my tablet

Tonight Windows decided to railroad it's latest unwelcome upgrade on my tablet which usually results in me having to track down and remove the latest "feature" or whatver useless piece of junk it decided I couldn't possibly live without. This time though; it has surpassed itself by reaching a previously unimaginable level of cussedness.

My tablet is a little Asus T100HA. It has a detachable keyboard which only rarely ever gets detached because I hate touchscreens; 99% of the time I use the built in mousepad or a wireless mouse plugged into the keyboard's only USB port. I would love to have a device which automatically disables the touchscreen when it detects the keyboard is plugged in but to the best of my knowledge no such animal exists. The only time I ever use it without the keyboard is when I'm flying and I use it as an E-reader. I need something small and dainty like this because I'm a FIFO worker with limited weight allowance; and all I use it for is web browsing, reading E-books and watching the odd movie.

Tonight though it came extremely close to being smashed against the wall because Windows has royally stuffed it. The keyboard is still working ok (I am typing this rant on it) but the mousepad is now completely unresponsive; there is no cursor on the screen and the buttons no longer function. The crowning piece of excretia though is now the external mouse won't work any more either so now I have no option but to use the touchscreen.

I have been through the control panel and it insists that the mousepad is fuctioning correctly. The wifi mouse is plugged into the only USB slot, which according to the troubleshooting action I've just taken appears to have magically turned into a USB 3 slot and is therefore "no longer compatible". I did a restart which achieved nothing; followed by a proper shut down and switch back on. To no avail; both devices are stuffed.

About my only recourse here is to do a complete factory reset YET AGAIN and hope for the best, but I can't do that until I've downloaded all my documents etc which won't be until I get home again in another week. After that then the first time it hooks up onto the interweb it'll realise it's missing several vitally important upgrades that will need half a day to install. Then and only then will I be free to remove or disable crap like Cortana and all the rest of the utterly useless app-things. That is of course before I get into the settings and spend even more time switching off just about every option available. Finally I then have to re-install my Kobo and Kindle software and upload all my books AGAIN, along with my browser settings and bookmarks/favourites. That's assuming off course that resetting the tablet actually returns the cusor again otherwise it'll get Float Tested; a naval expression where a defective item is thrown overboard in to fix it (if it sinks then it's properly broken beyond repair).

It's enough to make me want to hunt down Bill Gates and beat seven shades of crap out of him. Doing so would take a while though; because despite some experience in this field I've only seen three shades and never even heard of more than five. Still; I feel I could rise to the challenge.

So frustrated right now I wont even look for a "rant off" emoti-thing.

I feel your pain brother, kick him in the goolies for me while you have him down. Every version of windows since XP has been a backwards step. This old laptop is being held together with chewing gum and sticky tape and I will hang onto it for as long as possible as replacing it will mean windows 10. Mac is not without its issues but I would love a simple no frills alternative.

Just wondering if you have tried downloading and installing the latest drivers for the tablet from the Asus site? Worth a try before starting from scratch again.

Yeah; tried that last night before I'd posted. Had to uninstall the keyboard driver first because it couldn't work out why I would want to overwrite existing software. As I said; all the troubleshooting results said that everything is working fine. Still don't have a curser; the touchpad is inoperable and a plug in mouse won't work but I'm assured that everything is working fine.

I was a bit surprised tonight when i got in from work because when I switched it on there was another upgrade which forced itself to happen; and then while I was at dinner the machine restarted itself again. Did nothing to aleviate my angst though.

I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do another factory un-fornicate, have to wait another week first because I've got nothing to download my docs onto till I get home. Next pain will be the day spent reloading everything and paring away all the useless crap I'll never use; followed by the obligatory "upgrade" again when it realises it is several versions old. If it buggers it up again I think I'll just spend a comfortable half hour or so with a hammer.

Default Success! I managed to revert Windows back to a time when it was merely painfull...

Having spent a few hours nursing a new ulcer going through both the Control Panel and the Settings windows (couldn't just have one OR the other; WIN 10 must have both and of course they work differently...) I finally discovered that you can revert an update back to the previous version; so long as you don't mind losing another half hour or so and another big chunk of metered download .

Everything is working fine again now.

    Why; thank you!

Coming to forum near you soon:

Boguns; if I "go back to where I came from", who's taxes will pay your dole?
Women shoppers; rather than looked surprised and start hunting in your handbag for your purse, consider having your preferred method of payment at hand some time during the five minutes it takes the checkout chick to scan and bag your groceries. Does setting each WiFi connection you use to "Metered Connection" stop automatic updates? It did when I ran 10.
There isn't much I miss going back to 8, it's my favourite OS since XP, XP gets too many viruses and you can't do much with 4GB of RAM.

From my experience XP and W7 are the best MS have ever done. The wife has W8, I hate it with a passion!!!!!

The metered connection setting doesn't stop them, but it does reduce them. I have that option ticked everywhere; the major PITA update did give me the option of postponing it for a few hours or so but the follow-up had downloaded itself while I was at work the next day and did the usual trick of forcing me to restart before I could do anything else.

I've got over my obsession against MS updates. As much as I'd REALLY like a stable unchanging environment, I acknowledge Future Shock is here everyday and getting more enduring. One of the more reasonable defences against the bad bits is to keep most softwareish things up to date, even when it causes some personal pain. If Windows is your chosen platform, just learn to live with it. There are other options, but they usually involve more money and/or more administration knowledge.

I can defer updates for a long time in the PRO version. However I always update as soon as they become available as most are security updates, I know a lot of people have problems, however on the 4 PC's I have I've never had an issue with any update - it is what it is - I know a lot of users hate Win10. I program under it with various IDE apps and for me, coming form the CPM days, then DOS and Windows XX to Win 10, the latest builds have been the most stable of any for me. Win7 was always spitting the dummy, Win8 was a bit more stable towards the end but Win10 has been rock solid - and I'm resuming for weeks at a time before needing to do restart - usually for an update.

The question is, why do some users have absolutely no issues? Why do others have a really bad time of it? Is it hardware? Is 32 bit V 64 bit? Is the applications? I don't know?

BTW I have has a tiny palm sized tablet running Windows 10 in the vehicle for 3 years, it's a full entertainment and control interface system. It has 4 USB connected Microprocessor devices for vehicle interface like an iDrive control system, a mobile phone module, 2 GPS receivers, GPS mapping, GPS derived speed readout updated every 100ms, auto volume with speed, auto everything. Takes 9 seconds form IGN on to the DAB radio playing, you NEVER see a windows logo or screen, it monitors transmission sensors via another microprocessor, interface to the climate control system (another micro interface), it interfaces to the vehicle steering media controls, drives an 8" inbuilt touch screen and the list goes on. Now to the point - In 3 years I have not had to touch it - it has never failed - it has never hung - I know people hate windows 10 - but it's been 100% stable for me. Win8 on the same hardware running the same system was an absolute dog. Again, I'm not doubting the problems people have as I've had to help out many friends with problems, but then again I was doing that with every version.

I've often wondered at the fact that Microsoft is one of the more valuable companies in the world at the same time that they have such a long history of producing products that, while functional, are mediocre at best. I started using Windows professionally at version 3, which crashed taking my half written thesis with it. Subsequent versions gradually improved with some notable stumbles like ME up to XPSP3.

I had an unpleasant experience with a Win10 tablet that locked up on me during an important panel discussion last year, not a killer but very embarrassing. Reminded me of the Win3 incident I suffered years before.

I think that the more recent MS OS's were designed primarily for entertainment purposes, not for people who do work using their computers.
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

It would be nice if MS recognised that there is a small portion of their target audience who actually just want something incredibly basic. I browse the web for information; the only entertainment I look for is the odd You-tube video and this forum is the closest I get to social media. Play some MP3 music, watch an MP4 movie, show some MPEG pictures. Read some E-books. That is all I use my tablet for! It only has limited RAM so it is fairly easy to overload which is why I try to limit the amount of crap going on in its life.

After every upgrade I go searching to find out what extra nonesense has suddenly appeared; and then try to delete it. I noticed that this time there was an application for using VR helmets loaded that couldn't be uninstalled; because obviously everybody else apart from me needs it. Thankfully reverting back got rid of it.
