windows 7 and XP/sp3
In converstation I heard that Microsoft have a patch/update that allows a windows7 (home edition) computer to have a facility that allows xp and windows 98 to run on a windows 7 computer.
Is this a fact?
Can anyone please send me the link if so.woody U.K.

It's not exactly a patch, but it is do-able; I had my system set up that way. (Until I boobooed. )

Windows 7 on a boot drive will aloow you to run XP and 98 SE on separate hard drives, eg usb hard drives like i have done here, tho the hassles involved are many. Assorted software will have to be installed to run the windows environments as some software wont run all all versions of windows. In short it isnt worth the worry unless you have a great need to do so. I use XP professional and on my main hard drive WIndows ultimate, tho i use xp to run a telescope and windows 7 for general work. The files needed to run my telescope just cant be found as yet but i am working on it
Hope this helps

You don't need to do any of that.
Windows 7 has a feature that allows you to natively run an XP OS within the Windows 7 environment using Microsoft's VM.
This is really useful if, for example, you have a scanner that only has XP drivers. (Which is what I have).
You don't need to be a licenced XP user to use this feature, as it is part of the Windows 7 feature set, although you do have to download it separately.

I second the virtual machine set up - it's a good way to run old programs or test dodgy software.

I dont think I can run it on windows 7 homed edition, I think it has got to be one of the higher versions to obtain that facility.

In that case, it's open source to the rescue...
