Just my bloody luck, I went back to my computer shop to make an appointment, gone!

It was MLN and the nearest store is miles away. Can't take a trick

/ key is next the right hand shift key but you should not need it as it signifies the path to where the file is located.

As you have access to the internet have a look at https://www.google.com.au/search?q=n...nl+exe+missing.

I searched ntoskrnl exe missing and found a shed load of info but read the cautions as some fixes may cause loss of data etc

Take a closer look at your keyboard. On two of my computers, the backslash (\) key is near the right side, between "Backspace" and "Enter."

Have you tried to install the media in windows 10 and run it in XP compatibility?

I think if you right-click the .exe and select 'run as administrator'

Thanks elanjacobs, would a kind member walk me through loading a file that runs under XP and getting it to run under Windows 10 in compatability mode.

​All fixed, rather than stuff around and bugger up something else, I employed a professional team.

Apparently is was a bit tricky taking two and a half hours to sort out.

I'm told the boot files for Windows 10 and xp were corrupt.

You can tell when an organisation looks professional by looking at their website.

The company was Connect I.T. Sparks Ave Fairfield 3084, apparently been around for 14 years, Contact Sabi

Their fee was more than modest for the hours spent.

I found the compatibility mode in Windows 10 to be completely useless, I tried it once for a driver and once for a program. For some reason it just went crazy and refused to boot both times, I'm usually okay at getting a computer to run but I had to reinstall 10 both times.

Also, why was your computer forcing you to update to Win 10 now, or did it happen when it was still free?

In answer to your question, back when Windows 10 was free, I was plagued by Microsoft to install W10. At the time I had win 7 so declined their offer time and time again.

One day when I wasn't looking, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom just went ahead and installed W10 without my permission. When I realised what was happening, I figured it was too late, and thought I'd have a look at W10 anyway.

I didn't know at the time you could revert back to W7 within a specified time.

The bottom line is I left W10 not realising till a week later that xp no longer would fire up.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Yeah I'm sure there were millions of complaints about that.

If you want to get your activation code you can use a small program called Magical Jellybean, it works really well but I would uninstall it after use as your virus checker will no doubt spot it.

I have done a clean install with a new HDD and some more RAM and the code worked, some people that have done mods have had to contact MS as Windows seems to think it is on a new machine and it doesn't allow that.
