Thread: xp pro being discontinued?

There are still a couple of models of Toshiba Satalite A200 Notebooks that have WIN XP Pro as a 'downgrade'.

The last time I looked there were less than 400 in stock in Sydney.

It is probably true that XP will officially become unsupported by MS, however there will still be plenty of users out there and 3rd party anti virus support will be kept up for a long time.

For that matter I'd guess there are still lots of Windows 2000 commercial systems online and that OS has been out of support for a number of years now.

Will be interesting to watch. I am aware of a number of large corporations that have hundreds, if not thousands of computers running XP and have no plans to move at this time. It would also require them to replace the majority of the PCs if they move to Vista. Then again, does Microsoft care.

vista is a P.O.S. buy a copy of XP pro off the shelf and ask for "no preloaded OS" & do it yourself. If you get vista you'll be seriously off in no time. even mickeysoft execs dont want vista on thier machines yet!!!

This IS true. I have been advised that support ends at the end of 2008. This is really applicable to telephone support. There will always be forum/knowledge base support as there is for win98. SO you will still be able to get some support

This ISN'T. Vista *may* take over eventually, but it could also be Vista's successor that takes over. Vista has not been the resounding success that MS wanted it to be. Why? because it requires TOO much more hardware to run with the nce new interface and the (same old) problem of the lack of new drivers for hardware etc, etc. There are many new divers for Vista now so that problem is slowly being eroded.

Any idea as to whether they're telling porkies as per the marketing strategy from MS or is this a reasonable story?

They're not telling porkies but IT IS a marketing strategy from MS. It is getting harder to buy new hardware with XP OS. You can change from Vista to XP using your Vista license as the XP license. ie if you have Windows Vista on new hardware, you ARE allowed under MS licensing to install XP instead of Vista.

Also, does anyone have any feedback on Vista premium?

I thin it looks nice

Stability etc. How does it compare to xp pro?

IMHO I don't think it is as good, but this stability factor will vary for many people and will depend substantially on their hardware configuration.

Thanks for the feedback guys - much appreciated. From everything I've heard about Vista, it seems it may be similar in acceptance to the late and unlamented ME. Maybe I'm just stuck on XP Pro and unwilling to change for the sake of an upgrade that seems forced upon us. (I still shed a sentimental tear for Windows 98 - so many new programs don't work properly with it.)

I think I'll try installing XP again using the Vista licence obtained with the new machine. (unfortunately the Genuine Advantage update finally caught up with me and despite a cunning battle of wits over the last 2 months, MS finally won!)

From what I have heard, XP will not be sold from sometime in 2008. Support (ie bug fixes/patches etc) will continue for some time to come (I can't remember whether it's 2011 or 2014 that I have heard). One thing that may be a problem is that new hardware manufacturers may not necessarily develop drivers for XP (although personally I think many will - I suspect the opposite problem of getting drivers for old hardware to run on Vista will be harder).

The "problem" is that XP ended up being a basically very stable and robust desktop OS. I've not had to reinstall XP at home for something like 4 years. Every problem it has had I've been able to resolve without completely trashing the system. 98 couldn't do that.

Moving to Vista here at work, will probably require buying all new versions of our software for it all to work properly. So we'll be staying put for the foreseeable future.

Funnily enough, a guy I used to work with told me that his new job (this was a year ago) was doing a migration from WinNT to Windows 2000 in a very, very large (10,000 - 20,000 seats) organisation! Not everyone is an early adopter it would seem

Yes, go XP Pro at all costs and avoid Vista.

As for support, considering 99% of the time you get more support of a 3rd party computer nerd or off the internet, there will be more support online than you would ever get from some retard at Microsoft support (who would most likely just be reading off a checklist and not offer 'real' support)

The system I work for would have over 2000 PC's just in my district alone and we are not changing to Vista. We have specified that all new PC's are to have XP installed on them, not Vista. Chances are very likely that we will end up skipping a version, depending what the next version is like.

Buy a Mac.....

XP it is! I've put my foot down and right now I'm about as popular as a radioactive ????. Another productive day! Thanks for your input guys - it helped turn the pressure off me to acquiesce on the Vista machine.

You know, I always get the impression that bagging out MS products is a way for people to make out they know everything about computers.

For the home user vista is fine. Just like XP was fine, just like 98 was fine, and 95 was fine.

I run XP on a laptop - and its fine.

I run Vista on a PC - and its fine.

I bet the ones telling you to stay with XP were the ones who bagged XP out when it was released. A bit like the ones always suggesting using some obscure "geek" firewall or anti virus software....."Norton, dont touch that"....give me a break!

Just move on with a and address any issues as they come up

I don't pretend that I know everything about computers but I do manage a medium sized network of computers and for that XP is easier and more stable (and more secure too).
