YouTube - How Does It work
Hi Everyone,
I watch a number of YouTube videos from time to time. This is all very interesting & enjoyable but I wish to go further.
These questions may seem rudimentary to some of you but I'm not sure about a few things.
1. Will subscribing to a channel/s cost me $, or is it free ?
2. Is it easy to set up MY CHANNEL ?
3. Can I download & save the video's I like to my H/D for viewing anytime ?
4. Do I need special software for this ?
I already have a GOOGLE account & run Windows 7.
Looking forward to your assistance.
Regards
Alan

1. NO....edited due to me not reading the question properly.
2. Sorry I can't hep with that one
3 & 4. There are extensions for most browsers to do that. You can also set up and save favorites which in some ways is better because if you have a had drive crash you will lose your down loads.
Just be a bit cautious of some of the content on YT as some of the safety practises are down right awful or don't exist. Other than that it can be a gold mine of information for someone trying to learn skills. There is a thread around here somewhere with a list of videos recommended by forum users.CHRIS

Not everyone has a Goggle account and you would need to establish one.

Subscribing to a channel is 100% free. Unlike a magazine subscription where you sign up to pay a monthly fee to receive one issue each month, subscribing to a YouTube channel costs nothing because you "very almost" receive nothing for it. It's basically just a list of channels you have decided to be interested in, and when each channel uploads a new video, it will be front and center on your subscriptions feed tab in YouTube so you have the opportunity to watch or skip their latest video. The channel owner also receives nothing when someone subscribes to their channel, apart from the good feeling that comes when someone has said "yes, I enjoy watching this blokes stuff, I want to watch more".
Setting up your own YouTube channel is pretty easy. Create a YouTube account, which if I recall correctly is just one of your google accounts. From there you can hit the upload button and upload a video. Once you have uploaded a video you now have a "channel". You can then go on and set up a brand account, advertising, playlists plus a bunch of back end stuff like statistics and community management etc etc. It's all pretty straight forward for a bloke like myself. Even if starting as a complete novice, once you start you will have questions and they will probably begin with "how". for example "how do I set up a YouTube brand account" "How do I set up youtube advertising (monetization)" etc. Pump those into google and you are quickly offered up a plethora of information.
Depending on your data allowance each month, instead of downloading the videos, you could simply add videos you liked and want to watch again to a playlist so you can find them again quickly in the future.

From what I understand, one of the things to watch (or listen) for is the use of copy write material. This includes back ground music and radio channels. You can get music which is free to use or you have composed.

Chris - I do have a G/Acc. Saving as Favourites sounds like a good idea. Some of the work practices shown leave a lot to be desired re. safety. I have read the thread re. recommended W/W videos.
Bob L - Thanks for the information.
Kuffy - Good information. Data allowance is not very big so your idea of creating a playlist sounds good.
Handyjack - A Good point.
Thankyou all for your helping me to understand how it works.

Re: 3 & 4
It's not always straightforward to download a YouTube video, partially because YouTube doesn't want you to - they'd rather you watch in order to be exposed to ads.
An approach which works one day, may not work the next, so be prepared for an ongoing project rather than finding a solution once that works forever.
Having said that, solutions are often as simple as typing a couple of letters into the URL before or after "YouTube" to use a website which provides the download functionality.
Have a read of this article, which also visits the legal aspects of downloading rather than watching online:

Hi There is another possibility. I prefer VIMEO. You can set it up for sree, and you get 500 MB weekly for free. I use ti to store all my work, and it can be set up PRIVATE so only you can see it, or just let everyibe see it through the SETINGS. There is VIMEO PRO which does cost a little bit, but there is huge storage if you need it. It depends on how much video you want to make. Also you can send the URL via e mail to anyone you want to. So for instance if you make something and want to share it, You just copy and paste the URL into even this channel and there it is for all to see without them going to your channel,
for instance
https://vimeo.com/245068133
Hope this helps.
EG.

Hi EG,
Thanks for the reply.
I'll look into this option.
Don't mind the organ recital also.
