    Default Zipping folders software question

Just looking at my Programs folder, and I have 7Zip and Winzip and as far as I know I can't use either of them because they both want money. I find this somewhat unacceptable as I rarely need to unpack a download, and I've never had to pay for Unzipping software before Windows 10 reared its reasonably ugly head.

What does the brains trust use for zipping software please?

I'm fairly sure that if you download the latest version of WinZip (after uninstalling whatever you currently have) it will give you 30(?) days use as a 'trial copy' before licensing cripples it.

Personally I use WinRAR (actually, I use the cmd line .exes that come bundled with it) but I licensed that a long, long time ago and the keys are still good.

Well I just uninstalled WinZip. Now that I think about it the 7Zip option has never come up (does WinZip block it out?) so the next time I need to unzip it should be the default?

If you want to set the default program, right-click on the file to open, go to "open with" => "choose another app", then pick your program and check the box to set it as default

Although 7zip is nice and does other things, you could of course just use the native Win10 functionality to do this.

Alternatively I think you can start 7zip and go into the settings, look for "associate these files with 7Z" and do a select/unselect/OK.

It has been a while since I've played with it though.

I’m with you. I use Win10 by itself to extract all my zip files - no problems at all.

Just a follow up question - to which I think I may know the answer...

I have all my music files in two formats: MP3 compressed and FLAC uncompressed. If I zip the FLAC files folder to a backup disc, they will still remain as uncompressed files - even though the zipping has compressed them, right? (because it's a different kind of compression) As I understand it, zip compression just squeezes out the blank or unused space in the files which may not necessarily result in much space saving?

That is to say that if I then unzip the files from the backup disc they will still be of the same original quality....I think...

So following on from that, there is a utility to "Compress this drive" (say C drive). I made the mistake of doing that on a previous PC and everything took ages to open. However, is that the same sort of compression as zipping?

Q1 - Get rid of winzip and 7zip, download winrar. It does everything and is the standard for every self respecting pirate and hacker. The app is try before you buy for 40 days. After that, buy it or just click the OK button and the app still gives you full use.

Q2a - FLAC is already compressed, it's just in a compression format that doesn't compromise any audio, so you can't crunch it down any further with winzip or the like.

Q2b - Yeah, pretty much all the compression tools are based on a similar principal, they differ by employing their own algorithm that balances a trade off between read/write speed and reduction in file size.

Over the last decade or so, I have - by default - installed IZArc on every computer I use, and the family uses. And lots of other folks as well.

Donation-ware (not compulsory, it loses no functionality if you choose to not donate), it handles everything you could possibly want, with no nag screens.

It even happily unpacks .exe files if you really want to.

Why zip files in this day and age when storage is so big and cheap?

True, but it's a matter of sometimes having to unzip a download. Zipping is also useful to make emails smaller, but then again now that we all have the world's best broadband system, that shouldn't be an issue either...... (Mal told me to say that).
