The Australian Woodturning exhibition (AWTEX) was started in 1980 and is now the premier woodturning event in the country bringing together the best woodturning and wood turners in Australia.

The exhibition/competition runs yearly and is open to Students (under 18s), Novices, Intermediate and Master Turners.
The exhibition is a not for profit event and is run entirely by volunteers from a variety of clubs around Melbourne who see woodturning as an art form that is worthy of preserving and passing on to many generations to come.

Each year turners from around the country are invited to submit entries over a variety of categories from vessels, bowls, platters, identical pairs, wood art, functional items, miniatures, pens to ornamental work.

The end result is an annual event held during June in Melbourne, open over 3 days to the public, presenting outstanding wood art that hobbyists, craft, wood and art enthusiasts will appreciate.

Exciting News

AWTEX has moved to: Kingston City Hall in Moorabbin

After 10 years at Manningham The exhibition has out grown that venue and moved to a new one with NEW AND EXCITING ADDITIONS planned in response to demand from exhibitors and visitors alike. The Exhibition is moving to Kingston City Hall, Located on the corner of the Nepean Highway and South Road, Moorabbin, The new venue offers more space to display the exhibits and will allow the introduction of live demonstrations and exhibits. Should be a real beaut this year.

Why should you participate and exhibit your art work?
The Australian Woodturning Exhibition is a competition for all levels of turners from students (under 18s), novice, intermediate to master turners. It provides every turner the opportunity to raise their level of skill and produce pieces of art that meet the criteria of their peer turners, who use a strict criteria in which to judge the pieces with a view to finding the “best of” in their category.

Getting selected for judging gives a turner a good idea that they have reached a high enough skill level in terms of design, skill, level of difficulty and finish in their section. Winning a prize is a both a bonus and recognition that you are the best in you category and are ready to aspire to the next level on the way to being a master turner.

Many people say they are not good enough to enter. You don’t really know how good you are until you enter. Even if you are not chosen for judging, you will get the benefit of expert advice on how to raise the bar for next year.
Come on!! Get turning and have a go!!
