Thread: Boutique Timbers Auction preparation photos

Tried hard but could not get the weekend off work. BUMMER!!!
hope all that attend have a great day and the auction goes well.
After it's all over I will have to put in an order for some more Cedar.

Have heard its well under way and going well. I have a proxy doing my bidding I think?? I just hope he doesn't break the bank.

Any information as to the result of the auction, and prices realised?

Auction was quite successful, some really good bargains, but some top prices paid as well. Around 85% of the lots sold.

Many N Qld species in lots around 0.4-0.5/cm went for around $500/cubic metre in small lot form ($250 for 0.4-5 cm)
Red cedar sold from $1000/cm to double that with hobby packs of inch boards selling well.
Good quality dark cedar sold for $3000/cm in small lots, coffee table crutch boards sold for $70 each

Tas myrtle, snakewood 50mm boards for around $1500/cm
Mackay cedar was expensive around $3000/cube, some boards more, the flame inch boards x 2.5m x 4-500mm wide went for around $250-300 each
Camphor sold well, one slab at 1.5m wide x 3m went for $800, others 3.5m x 700mm went for $350
The Giant red cedar slab sold for $700
Hoop pine slabs at 4.5m x800- 900mm went for $200 each
Spotted gum slabs at 3m x 700-800 went for $130-50 each
Hardwood boards were of excellent quality and sold well, all around half retail price.

Some big slabs 3m x 600-800mm wide (with cracks) such as rosewood, African mahogany, yellowbox, antarctic beech went for $30-150 dollars.

Thanks to all who attended and we hope to see you all there again next year around the same time.

The Rollands Plains Trust that manages the Recreation Ground facilities (which are also being set up to become part of the national campdraft scene) is planning to make this a annual event promoted as a 'TIMBER FEST', with displays and exhibitions (perhaps Lucas mills, mens's shed, woodworking groups etc etc), with the auction run by Boutique Timbers to be held on the Sunday as part of the festival.

By the time I got home on Sunday night I was so tired that I just parked the trailer and mentally prepared myself for a couple of BIG work days. I'll unload it tomorrow and it will be like unwrapping Christmas presents again. I got some dark red cedar to finish the chairs and a pack of that BEEEAUTIFUL fiddleback blackbutt!
Anything beyond those 2 will be a surprise!
I can recommend the event to everyone. It's not just a sale, it's woodies' heaven!

Greg thats great news even more so with future plans maybe next year we can get there. I'll have to use lots of wood between now and then.

I arrived home with a small block of Tallowwood for a mate.

The truck with the rest will arrive next week!!!

I managed to pick up all the Pepperwood timber I needed for 16 bench seat I have to build, a few African Mahogany boards and several long wide Snakewood boards.

The Rollands Plains showground is a great venue with plenty of room, great catering by the local Trust and the whole event was well run by Mal and Greg. A bigger camp fire on Saturday night is my only suggestion.

Great to spend some time with Fletty as we discussed bidding tactics.......none of which worked. I am glad you finally managed to get the Red Cedar for your chairs.

Looking forward to being there next year.

For those who are thinking of going next year but are a bit daunted by auctions, I'll explain my problem above. From the auction, all that l 'needed' as compared to 'wanted' was some straight lengths of australian red cedar (arc) to make 4 42 x 48 x 1300 chair legs AND there were 2 packs of exactly what I needed at about the half way mark. I had worked out my first bid and how high I would go if pushed ..and waited!
What I hadn't taken into account was a fellow woodie who had a most unusual case of Tourette's Syndrome! Whenever the auctioneers said "Australian red cedar" he blurted out an apparently uncontrollable "$200!" ...which was well above my intended first bid and, for some lots, was above my top bid!
Scally and I plotted various distractions and interventions (including violence) but all to no avail. By about three quarters of the way through the auction he'd bought the lot!
I was getting desperate! There were 2 lots of arc hidden amongst some other remaining lots and I saw him head to the canteen for his 7th sausage sandwich, he mustn't have seen them, and I struck at lightning speed and picked up both lots before he'd decided between tomato or bbq sauce!
i was so proud then of my victory but it was only today when I unpacked the trailer that I realised to make 4 chair legs I had bought enough arc to make another 6 complete chairs!

If you can find out who he is you might be able to flog your surplus at a profit.

Reminds me of a movie where two people were bidding on the same thing(Husband and Wife) in two locations of the auction room (Lucia Ball and her Husband).

Thanks Austin, 'little Flett' hasn't been out yet to check it out yet but I'm sure it will be well received.

Just as an aside, IF next year's Rollands Plains does become a broader timber and woodwork show, maybe we should display items made from last year's timber?
