Hand Saw Exhibition at Camp Oven Festival

Millmerran is the scene of the largest Camp Oven festival in Australia and held every two years. This year it is on 1/2 October (first weekend). However, the vans roll in all through the preceding week and there is always the problem of how to entertain the visitors. The organisers endeavour to think up "attractions."

This is where I come in this year, not that I could be regarded as overly attractive myself. The ravages of too many birthdays have put paid to that. However, for those of you interested in such things, I will for two days have an exhibition of my vintage hand saws on display at the local Historical Society, which is on the main drag through town and walking distance from the showgrounds where the Festival is held.

I will be there between 0900hrs and 1500hrs on the Wed and Thurs (28/29 Sept) with some of my saws.

I will also be sharpening saws. This is partly because I will be there for two days and if nobody wants to talk to me I have to have something to occupy me. Otherwise I would go stir crazy and they'd cart me off to the old people's home, which is at the other end of the road. I also have a huge number of saws that just have to be sharpened.

If you are visiting I hope you will call in and say "hello." If you wish to bring some refreshment and or sustenance, some old dry bread, a little mouldy cheese or similar, that would be good, but certainly not essential.

To give some idea of the display you can expect I have attached some pix of the last exhibition at the Historical Society (It is worth a visit in it's own right as it is quite extensive) and one that happened in the library.

Good luck with your expo Paul. I hope some colourful characters will roll up to keep you entertained too. You may need a ute load of saw files to get through your "mountain" of saws

I talk to almost anybody. Some people say I talk too much. When I was a child, sometime through the middle of last year I think, I had the reputation of not saying much at all.

A ute load? Don't know I can manage that. This is the best I can do:

Besides which, the Administration Person/Treasurer handles all the files as part of her duties and at 23Kg (that's the orange and black box, not her) she is starting to struggle lugging them around. However, I have promised her a trolley: For her birthday.

Hope your expo goes well Paul. Nice place Millmerran, stayed there at the Showground a couple of years ago.

Would love to attend the Camp Oven do but it is on at the wrong time of year for us, granddaughters' birthday 9th October and we always go to Adelaide for that. Although this year she is visiting us and flying back to Adelaide on her own (she will be 12).

If you had let me know early, I could I've attempted to con my boss into some RDOs
And come up and spent two days talking bs I'm quite proficient in bs

I had been meaning to post details for some time, weeks even, and kept finding something else to do. That would have been wonderful if you came up, but it is a long trek. probably 1800Kms and two days of fairly solid driving (and then the same back without the attraction of talking "BS" with other like minded people).

Something that does occur is that I am nearly ready to undertake the sloped gullet evaluation. The five D-23s have been restored and my plan is to sharpen them over the two days of my exhibition. Then I have to set a date for the testing. I was hoping to invite some dedicated "test pilots" and other interested parties rather than perform the testing myself (because we all know how that would pan out or so the perception would be).

Something to think about or mourn over if you prefer as it is a very long way. Accommodation and sustenance this end can be provided.

I'll be very interested to see your results. Much talk has been made of sloping but I have yet to see anything convincing. Enjoy your expo, looks very nicely set up.

Bit over 2hrs away would be nice to see your saws again Paul admired them greatly a Bret's, can't say it'll happen never know what we are up to. Hope its a good weekend weather wise.

Are you hinting that because my forum name is "simplicity"
You assume I would be a perfect lab rat ?
All muscle(hidden under a layer of insulating fat)no brains perfect for picking up a slopped gullet saw and being told to cut that piece of timber in half.
Under the clock .
With no pre conceived ideas of what should or shouldn't be.

Is there a chance this whole notion as been harbour behind close doors with out a hint to my fair self.

It went very well indeed except that it took two days to sharpen two saws. This was mainly because I was preoccupied and distracted by talking too much.

I had to wait for some pix to be sent through to me and then I deleted them by accident! I was a few moments ago lamenting the fact they had not been sent through when SWMBO pointed out she had seen them before we went away for a few days down to Newcastle!

This is me explaining that it is really important to hold the correct end of the saw and having no luck persuading them you can cut twice as much if you hold two saws together:

Actually I think I was showing off two of the Simonds No.5 I recently restored.

And this is me doing my damnedest to make out I know what I am talking about. I think I had them convinced for a while at least.

You can see in the background all the old road signs to keep me on track.

It was most pleasing to have discussions with the visitors from the Camp Oven Festival. They would wander in and have a chat and then sit down at the cafe tables which were conveniently right next to me and then they would come back and talk again. Marvelous. Just a shame it doesn't pay well.

Sometimes I would sit and have something to eat with our visitors and for a few minutes we would identify all the problems in the world and solve none of them.

Possibly the highlight for me, not so many pinnacles for the visitors I'm afraid, was the visitor who said he had inherited a Stanley catalogue from his father, who had passed away recently. AND he just happened to have it in his vehicle! A 1936 edition which had both the Stanley mitre boxes that I had on display listed. One was about $15 and the other just under $25. It made my day.
