Thread: Kyneton Vic. Lost Trades Fair.

In terms of woodwork, the only things I SAW for sale were new tools from Terry Gordon (HNT Gordon planes) and Colen Clenton? The HTPA boys were there too but I only saw demos, not selling? There was certainly no timber for sale.

The Bathurst event is on the same weekend as the Ballarat Woodies swap meet.

In the past years, CurlyTimbers used to show up with a selection of fine timbers, but I looked and looked and didn't see any timber stands. There was a American toolmaker demonstrating and selling travishers and spookshaves that she had made.

Went to the fair today for the first time. Was really great! Much better than I expected and great for the whole family or in my case for both my girlfriend and I. Highly recommended.

I tripped and accidentally bought a Travisher from Claire Minihan and a Radius plane from Terry at HNT Gordon. Both look like great tools for chair making which I'm hoping to get into and having tried the Travisher it is really nice.

It is definitely worth attending and, other than the entry hassles, it is very well organised and obviously well attended. There is a similar event happening soon in Bathurst so, for those of us North of the Murray, I'll get some more details and post.

We made it. Was on the go non stop trying to keep the kids happy.

They liked the horse and cart



And each had a pat



Even had a go at pottery



Saw some nice hand made spoke shaves made by a lass from the states



And lots more.

Every time I grabbed my phone to try and ring Paul or Alan it seemed either the crutches or kids prevailed. Was hoping to touch base.

I did use my phone in the que to by tickets and then took the express route.

Alright, I can't stand the pressure any more. I will be there in the morning. I have been looking at Claire Minihan's tools online. Now that I know she is there...

That was fun. So many amazing craftspeople doing their thing. It's a bit of a shame how so much of this stuff has become a lost trade. The one thing I couldn't get my head around was the manual lathe. Some processes are enjoyable by hand but using the lathe while pedalling your foot didn't look fun to me.

I had a play with the HNT Planes. They are beautiful tools that cut extremely well. I'll make do with my Stanleys for now. I don't think I'd ever do it justice though. It did show me how good a smoothing plane could be. One day...

Definitely worth the trip. Looking forward to the next one!

The popcorn was fantastic.

I caught up with Claire MInahan only to find out she sold out of travishers yesterday

She did, however, have one under construction which I bought sight unseen and she is posting to me before she leaves Australia.

She was just amazing to talk to and learn from.

Terry Gordon was demonstrating how to make his planes and not how to use them for a change, and that was very informative too.

I watched a demonstration of French Polishing which was also very informative. In the 50 minutes that this demonstration took the crowd seemed to double in size and manners were going out the window rapidly.

To the 6'8" gorilla who walked up behind me and attempted to manhandle me out of his way:
- I hope you are not a forum member
- you deserved everything you got
- I hope your girlfriend is still paying out on you for what happened

All in all a pretty good day and I will go back again.

And another vote for the popcorn, it was fabulous!

I also watched the French polishing demo yesterday, luckily for me, without the gorilla. Maybe I'm a slow learner because I've watched many such French polishing demos and I only seem to learn 1 'trick' from each one? I had never seen his 'splat test' method before although I think I have seen others do it but without telling me why they did it? He 'stamps' the loaded rubber onto a flat surface and then looks at the 'splat' pattern to decide if the rubber is correctly loaded. As I was five rows back, I had to ask what a good splat pattern looks like ...... and his answer was "PRACTICE"!
I think I will have a similar result to when I tried to learn tea leaf patterns from a mystic!

Now home safe and I will unload the car tomorrow, stuff from collectable shops, wineries, Timbecon .......and Lost Trades

The salted caramel with cinnamon was definitely better than the plain salted caramel but they were both fantastic.

I had not meant to imply that the gorilla attack occurred at the french polishing display, only that the crowd doubled while I was there. The gorilla attacked after I left the french polishing area.

Well he told the group today that he had a major stuff up yesterday with the splat test. He somehow got distracted between loading the rubber and testing it and forgot to squeeze out the excess and it splatted out over his prepared demonstration pieces. All the "
here's one I prepared earlier bits got splatted.

Could be lucky for you that you were five rows back or you might have gotten some free shellac too.
