Preparing new veneer for use
Folks - I am about to use veneer for the first time. I reviewed the forum for preparation of veneer and there was a 2006 response that led to a link. The link was apparently very good but alas is now gone. Can anyone advise how to prepare the veneer? The advice I have been given is to wet the veneer and keep it clamped for 5 days before use..... Any more detailed advice? Thanks GDA

A spray bottle with a brew of: 3 parts water, 1 part glycerine, 1 part metho.
Spray lightly till damp, turn over and spray back. Let sit 5 minutes.
Prepare several sheets of newspaper and a couple of thick bits of MDF. Lay 5 or six bits of paper down first then make a lesagna of sheet, paper, sheet. Put MDF on top and a couple of bricks. After a couple of hours add more bricks. You want to add weight slowly.
Now, this part everyone disagrees on, as it's a personal choice, but after a day so swap the newspaper for fresh stuff and really add some weight to it... Don't be too keen to do it early as the warpy bits need time to soak up the juices. I have some concrete lumps I made in buckets. Every 6 hours change out the paper until it's dry. Then swap out to kitchen paper towels, but there is no more need for big weights, is already flat.
For crumbly stuff and burls, make it wetter, use less weight and go slower.
Edit 1: I just remembered, some people use one or two parts of wood glue in this mix, but I've never understood why. With mine, sometimes I add a little more glycerine or metho. You can use the odourless metho if it bothers you (wifeypoo might not like it while you are doing this on the dining room table). Don't be too religious about the exactitude of the mix. I also find it's better to warm it up.
Ooooo, another note, if you are doing burls, hold crumblies together with blue painters tape on one side.

GDA,
Make sure you change the papers as WP says. If you leave the veneer in damp paper it can develop mould.
All this assumes you’re using buckled veneer. If your veneer is already flat, no prep necessary.

Head over to this YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu8...blVUpmw/videos
Look up the series of veneering with Peter Dunsmore. It seems pretty comprehensive to me, but I confess I have not tested or used these methods myself.
