So have you sold out to the opposition? Is this gadget a replacement for your famous tendon jig??
David if you are interested in putting a meaningfully big load upon one of your chairs I can organise to bring a large sheet of black plastic to catch any spills should a collapse occur (we know it won't) and I can bring along 8 x 40 kilogram bags of cement which will equate to an average 4 x 80 kg people upon the chair to see how it goes and if you really want I will bring a couple of extra bags to really push it? Let me know.Cheers

Teejay,
I wouldn't want to feel responsible for all the global warming that would occur if you burn the petrol to bring all that cement. I will just put a stout board on the chairs and ask people to climb on and be willing to jump for their lives if they hear cracking noises

Just turned some trinket boxes out of some of the cedar and swamp mahogany here. I haven't got the cedar yet, but should have it before the event hopefully.

Those boxes are very nice Neil. Tom and I will have to learn how to turn one of these days....
We're heading out to Wilcannia this weekend (yes, the middle of nowhere). Anyone know of good desert timbers we should nab and bring back? I don't even know if there is a saw mill....I know there are not many sealed roads, might have to do a google search.
Cheers

I now have three zigzag chairs ready to be tested at the gtg, each with different joinery. One has a mitred bridle joints, the same as the chair I brought to the Midge gtg last year. The other two have 22.5° mitres. One of these chairs has three 6mm thick reinforcing tenons with 1/8" brass pins; the other has a single 10 x 33 mm through tenon with pins made from 10-gauge brass screws (since I can't easily source 6 mm brass rod). I have tested the latter chair with one 104 kg person standing on it, and found that, when loaded with this weight, the rear end of the side rail is depressed by 4 mm compared to its unloaded position. This means the chair has a comfortable springiness when sat on. Since I don't want to risk breaking perfectly good chairs, I think I will limit the testing weight to 250 kg. If, as I fully expect, they pass this test unscathed, I think it will demonstrate that the zigzag design is perfectly safe for all, except perhaps the grossly obese.

I have made a morticing jig, as an additional door prize for next month's GTG. If the winner already has one, or owns a Domino or a slot morticer, they can choose one of the other door prizes instead.
