    Default Sending Parcels Interstate

If anyone needs to send parcels interstate may I strongly advise you to check out Officeworks.

I'm in upper sunny coast Qld, mum wanted to send me a small circular saw from Perth, 4.8kg weight and 400w, 235h and 275L.
Auspost calculated the size by volume and wanted $92.
Officeworks have a deal 10kg for $22 - so mum was able to repack the saw and send me some other stuff as well.

Officeworks say Perth to where I am is 10-16 days, mum lodged the parcel on March 9 and I got it at my door March 16.

Side note - I know you can buy cheap saws but this is an old reliable Makita which belonged to my father.

Was that Officeworks to your door or Officeworks to Officeworks near you & you collect?

Gotta be OW-to-OW Cliffy (like eBay and Woollies Near You), but who cares - cheap as chips!

    Thanks for posting Fonix!

Thanks for the heads up! Might be an idea to have a thread with everyone's preferred affordable transport solutions?

I might as well tag onto this thread just to say that I recently used TasFreight to transport a pallet of 300x50mm Tas oak to SA for a client's stair case. Only cost $290 which I thought was very reasonable. Depot to Door that is! Next closest quote was twice that price and even with transport cost these stair treads came out a lot cheaper than what I could source here in SA.

Pretty sure the OW 'Mailman' service is OW to your door. They can't, however, deliver to PO boxes, locked mail bags or remote islands.
The only catch is you have to send it from an OW. Nearest one to here is 1 hr away. Auspost might be more expensive but there is a post office in every town.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Cliff that is OW to your door - you drop off at your nearest office works and they deliver to the receivers door.

Pack and send are expensive but will move things others won't, like very long items. They have various options so can be cost effective. I've sent a few difficult things with them over the years.

I've been wondering if there is a cost effective way to ship my car to new zealand and back. I'm going to build a slide on camper and would prefer to use my own rig rather than rent a motorhome...

When I feed the OP's measurements and weight into the Auspost postage calculator it comes up with a price of $48.85. Still that's more than twice the $22. Of course Auspost does have similar prepaid products to Officeworks and if the saw could have been fitted in a flat rate 5Kg satchel (it wouldn't) the cost would have been only $17.60. Cost of a 5Kg prepaid satchel from Officworks is $17.00, not a difference that you should be going out of your way to take advantage of. So it tends to be a matter of who provides a combination of the most convenient service and best rate for a particular item rather than one company being the best for everything. I'd be surprised if there isn't size restrictions on the Officeworks 10Kg parcel. Sendle and e-go are other services that can be worth a look.

As someone who regularly sends items via post and courier I don't find any of the quoted prices particularly attractive, but for a one off they're fine.

Just found out the maximum length for Officeworks Mailman is 50cm (they don't make it easy to find this). Auspost is 105cm, Fastway is 210cm, not sure of the max. length for e-go, but they'll handle just about anything so 3 metres probably isn't out of bounds.

50cm is pathetic! Even Auspost at 105cm is restrictive - but I have had them handle the back end of US Post deliveries which have been 130cm roughly.

I seem to recall that with Fastway you have to buy a book of (too) many tickets? Then each parcel sent is xx tickets? Is that right?

Yes, that's right unless you have an account, so no good for one off needs. Once you have an account though there's an extra range of fixed rate products available that I use a lot! Sendle and e-go do one-off's though.

Certainly agree with you concerning the length restriction Brett. Interestingly Auspost will seemingly handle almost any length or girth for contracted returns or parcels from overseas. And then there's the fact that their delivery service is apparently available to senders overseas for a pittance, as an example I recently received a small, light order from China where the cost of the goods and postage was less than what I would have had to pay for postage alone here. There's simply no way to compete against that unless somebody wants something in a hurry.

AP contract to deliver mail from OS where the postage for that mail/parcels is paid in the originating country so they have no say in the cost of that postage. The fact that it is over size also is not something that AP can control either though I bet they would like too as it stuffs up the loading in the trucks big time.

I think the short answer is no. My son and family moved to NZ a little over two years ago and found it was pretty expensive to take cars so sold them and bought others over there. It is not only the cost of shipping but cleaning etc. to comply with quarantine rules. Even though NZ is relatively close it still took about three weeks for their furniture to get there.

The people we bought our car from in Victoria were moving back to the UK. They wanted to take the car with them, loaded it up and shipped it over. When it arrived in the UK they were told they didn’t have any paperwork and were told they would have to pay huge $’s (more than the value of the car) or send it back to Australia. They decided to have it shipped back. A very expensive holiday for nothing more exciting than a Ford Focus .

    Check the paperwork before sending.
